Nick Kypreos @RealKyper
Milan Lucic days as a @EdmontonOilers are over. With Lucic waving his no move clause it opens up the trade to @NHLFlames. At this point sounding like a 1 for 1 trade for James Neal. @NHL

Has this been verified? Stick to the speculation board. I kid.

It's a really good thing for the Oilers to get out from that boat anchor. I hope this is true even if Neal doesn't bounce back.

Since we have to be optimistic, it sounds like Neal's issue last year was he let his fitness slip. He has always had skill, and this summer he is going hard with Gary Roberts (probably will be training with McDavid) to try to get it back. Lucic on the other had, fitness has never been an issue...he just has no skill. He's working with a skills coach in LA this summer, finally, but how much can someone with so little skill actually build up in a summer?

If nothing else, Neal has no NMC or NTC and is alot more buyout friendly.

The radio says the Oilers are retaining some salary... I don't necessarily like paying to help Calgary when they're reigning division winners, but I still like getting rid of Lucic.

The Stauffer telegraph strikes again!

They have definitely changed the way they do business at Oilers Corp.

- the lack of NMC makes this a win for the Oilers. Not having to protect him in the expansion draft is big
- These are the stats from last year
Neal - 63 GP, 7 G, 12 A, 19 PTS, -5, 2 PPG & 141 SOG

Lucic - 79 GP, 6 G, 14 A, 20 PTS, -9, 2 PPG & 74 SOG

I would guess he has a better chance to bounce back. His career shooting % is 11.6. Last year it was 5.

This isnt a deal that turns around the team but it is one step out of cap hell.

Fun article from pre FA, 2018 and pre Neal signing a bad deal and playing awful for the Flames.

The devil is in the details, but as a one for one on the surface that trade would be very good. The reallocation on salary may make it less good, but if you read here regularly and didn’t just do drive-by grousings, you’d know that I wrote a comparison of these two players a few weeks ago and said I’d much rather have James Neal.

Pretty happy from a player perspective about this and even happier that Lucic is now the Flames problem.

I think the only bad thing is that Lucic will be a good playoff guy for them and fills a role they definitely need.

Let's hope Neal can bounce back.

That will be the key. What do you think we be the cutoff?

0 - 1$MM /season = good
$1MM - $2MM/season = maybe
$2MM - $3MM/season = bad

Better be both teams retaining some, just to make the blow a little more even if Lucic is bought out.

We better not end up with 7M Neal/retained and Flames get 5M Lucic.

Also - when is the retained salary. I do not believe it needs to be consistently allocated across the remaining seasons. If we take more this year and less or none in the next couple, that’s much better.

Lucic was supposed to be a good playoff guy for us. And for LA. He was pretty pedestrian in both runs. We shall see though, maybe it really was all Oilers (and LA) water.

The amount of salary retained determines how much Calgary screwed up. I see this as a massive addition by subtraction. Lucic would have been such a distraction all year. Nevermind his disastrous contract. Very pleased so far.

The only way this would have been better would be if Bennett and Puljujarvi were included in the swap.

At the very least, Neal plays on Nuge's wing and is a big part of the PP.

Treliving has normally swindled other GMs... this time he looks to have been on the receiving end (pending retention and pick comp).

Massive addition by subtraction for the Edmonton Oilers.

Sounds like the NMC paperwork and the trade call are still to be completed. Not positive it gets officially completed today.

The NMC documents are probably in a vault in a 3rd world country in the middle of a war zone. Chia conceded doing that in negotiations to make trading Lucic even more difficult.

I'd guess Oilers leaked first, since you have Principe and Rishaug, both team lap dogs, as the ones announcing it.

Calgary reporters come second, and they're the ones reporting that there's also a conditional pick and Edmonton eating some salary.

If people are going to leak, I'd appreciate if they just leaked everything.

Even if the Oil retain salary, the fact remains that Neal would be easier to buy out than Loo if things go sour, so this is looking like a definitive win for Holland. Seriously, what sorcery did he use to get Treliving to agree to this?

Somebody needed to ride shotgun for johnny hockey i guess. Assuming it's one for one or close to it, Neal would basically have to injure McDavid for us to lose this deal.

Lol, I just texted my brother to say the same thing...hopefully Lucic doesn’t injure McDavid now.

A few years ago I wanted to get Neal, now I’m not as excited but as long as it didn’t cost us a 1st (like Toronto/Marleau) to get away from that contract I think we did just fine.

I guess we may be able to go by how he played vs the Kings and Bruins.

...I don't think he did crap against either team, maybe even less than vs non-ex teams.

Maybe the trade lights a fire under him, but to me, the last couple years, I've just seen a guy that looks like he wants to retire with his money and without any extra damage on his body.

Was curious, here are Lucic's stats vs ex teams as an Oiler:

Boston:
6GP: 1 goal, 1 assist, -1, 2 PIM, the 1 goal was on the PP

Kings:
12GP: 2 goals, 1 assist, -6, 14 PIM, 2 goals were both on the PP

So, 2 even strength points in 18 games vs ex teams. 2 PIM vs Bruins. All 14 PIM against Kings came in 1 game, 0 PIM in the other 11.

Here is how his 14PIM game was described. Many might remember this one:

#27 Milan Lucic, 2. Had 0 shot attempts, and his team mustered just 1 shot during his 11 minutes (4 against , including a goal). Has 1 shot in his last 5 games and hasn’t had a decent scoring chance for what seems like a month. In a game where Doughty took liberties with McDavid early, Lucic took a few shots behind the play at guys like Oscar Fantenberg, Austin Wagner, Sean Walker and Brendan Leipsic, he didn’t so much as reintroduce himself to former teammates like Doughty, Kopitar, Dustin Brown and Jeff Carter, let alone Jonathan Quick. Got an early shower when he took 14 minutes in penalties against little Brendan Leipsic, who is 5 inches shorter and over 50 pounds lighter than him. Slashing, cross-checking, misconduct. That’ll show ’em.

Was a game where mcDavid took multiple cheap shots from Doughty, and Lucic went after the smallest guy he could find (5'10" Brendan Leipsic) and gave him a cheap shot to get himself ejected.

Sounds like the NMC paperwork and the trade call are still to be completed. Not positive it gets officially completed today.

The NMC documents are probably in a vault in a 3rd world country in the middle of a war zone. Chia conceded doing that in negotiations to make trading Lucic even more difficult.

If there is more than $500K held back in salary that’ll be loss.

Depends how much more. If it's not much then not really a loss. You now have more options if Neal doesn't work out, his contract isn't buyout proof, he doesn't need to be protected and you can trade him somewhere else. Lucic had his NMC/NTC

Plus he has a better chance of scoring more that 10 goals this year

If they retain half the salary this year, I wouldn't care. The Oilers are saving a full year and 6 million over the course of the contract while having no plans to be good this year. I care about next year and the year after in particular on the retention part of this trade.

Didn't catch it myself, but sounds like Bob McKenzie said it's 125k/year retention to even the cap hits out. Both guys end up costing 5.875M

Thank Jesus, et al.

Interesting. The Oilers don’t play the Flames until December 27th.

Okay - now what's the pick? That's the last piece here we need to know.

So far, this is all good news...if that's a first round pick, then less so!
