I'm dismayed about the rumoured Frederik signing for $(3.5-4.0)M x 8
What the team missed was forward speed and mobility.. didn't see it at all with Frederik.. his forecheck was not a threat.. some of the problem "may" have been remnants from his ankle injury .. but are you going to take an 8 year risk it wasn't?

And he didn't look that over powering in the intimidation front either.. Kane intimidates people.. Fred doesn't. You need a credible threat of harm.. not a Zack Stortini..

If they move Kane's $5M to do it.. you save $1M and you're less imposing, weaker forecheck.. IMHO

Whatever happens they have to lock McDavid up first.. screw everyone else.. then Bouchard.. then see what ya got left.

Capwages already has it up at 3.85 through the 2033 season. So hooray

You're 100% correct. The Oilers need to work big to small. McDavid first. Bouchard second. Depth forwards, when you can get to them or when they agree to a discounted price.

Yeah I don’t get the Frederic thing. I do not give a guy an EIGHT YEAR contract until he’s shown me what he is for atleast a year. A couple months gives you a year or two. He’s shown nothing in an Oilers uniform so far.

Not to mention, Kane is a proven goal scorer too. Frederic's not a young prospect with upside potential. He's 27. he is what he is... and isn't what he isn't.

that's too true.. Fred is close to what he will be.

.. you 're right Kane is also a proven goal scorer.. Fred is not.

.. kinda applies to Nurse as well.. Oilers applied the same hope factor to Nurse's contract .. thought he'd progress to fit the contract.. and here we are.. $9.25M.. NMC.. x 8 .. and still routine rookie mistakes

Then don't check out their 2026-27 projects that haver McDavid at 15M, Bouchard at 10, and the Oilers a full Nurse over the cap.

I really don't understand the joke. Frederic for almost $4M for 8 YEARS?!?!?

What am I missing? He looked like...well not much with the Oilers. Honestly I don't think we would have been worse off if he wasn't on the ice. I don't think he cost us much, but he also didn't contribute much.

He's never been much of a scorer at any level that I can see. Not even .5PPG in the AHL. A high of 40 points a couple of years ago. Not a ton of PIM. Does he normally play hard?

I really don't get either the term nor the amount. And why it needed to be done before anything else. Insanity. Hope I'm proven completely wrong on this.

Double the cost and four times the length it should have been. Honestly insanity.

Yeah, where is the discount for 8 years? You usually give term to drop the AAV. But we are paying way over market value on both.

This is just straight up sabotage if it really happens. Like Nurse's deal, Campbell and Lucic before.

Agree.

They'd be buying out that contract in 4 years.. tops.. maybe sooner.

He's a guy you give tops 2.5 x 8 .. or 3.2 x3 .. there is also the factor he would be signing on with a team that's an annual contender each year .. winning more games than losing.. that's got value as a player.. Oilers should be leveraging that aspect with him.. and every other potential signee.

You could argue a 1st/2nd pair Dmen or a starting goalie are rare commodities and worth taking a long term risk on.

Frederic... there's NO plausible argument for a 20-30point bottom six forward to get anything over three years.

I'm hoping there is enough pushback / outrage that our insecure management pull the Frederic deal. It's been so leaky around the deal, there is a glimmer that they could have been floating the idea before actually signing the contract.

...on the bright side we won't have to argue who's our next buy out.

Tracy (Bob) indicating Skinner is open to be moved..

Not sure I would.. he's at his lowest value.. he's young for a goal tender.. rumour is Schwartz's contract is up and may not return.. he's got raw value.. could rebound.. goalies have a habit of that.. like Binnington.. and what do you replace him with?.. that you can fit under the cap? .. and not waste assets trading for what is usually a voodoo position? Maybe keep Skinner.. try Jake Allen (UFA) and roll.. ?

To put it in perspective.. C. Brown will likely sign for under $2M.. short term.. and Fred performance wise has not been much better.

Imagine what you could do with $9.25M ..

Still 2 more years on Nurse's deal before he has a 10 team no-trade list. And even with that, he needs to be paid a 6M bonus each of the last 3 years of his deal (and the 4th last, 26/27 which has full NMC still) icon_dead

Seriously, wth Holland? icon_frown

I'm hoping there is enough pushback / outrage that our insecure management pull the Frederic deal. It's been so leaky around the deal, there is a glimmer that they could have been floating the idea before actually signing the contract.

...on the bright side we won't have to argue who's our next buy out.

According to CapWages, the deal was signed 6 days ago.

Assuming that's the case, and I have no reason to doubt it, then there's no taking it back. Not until the buyout after year four at least.

If Schwartz is bonefide zero chance returning GONE… and we get a proven NHL level goalie coach come in… I could see a small argument to keeping Skinner. Assuming the goalie coach sits down for a week or two, looks at his game, and feels confident he can plug the holes.

… but if we land a bonefide AAA starter, I do it.

Staffer says Perry wants 2 x 2.5M

I mean, considering he outperformed all our other wingers this year in the regular season and playoffs, I get where he is coming from. Of course that’s also a massive embarrassment for our current winger group. But dang that would be a lot to go in 2 years and the deal can’t be taken off the cap if he retires after year 1.

To be fair, Stauff didn't actually say Perry is "asking" for 2.5M he said he could probably "get" 2.5M on the UFA market.

But most of those teams would not be contenders.. He wants to win The Cup.. so I could see Perry coming back for low, plus some bonuses.. He brings a lot of value .. all around..

I'm hoping there is enough pushback / outrage that our insecure management pull the Frederic deal. It's been so leaky around the deal, there is a glimmer that they could have been floating the idea before actually signing the contract.

...on the bright side we won't have to argue who's our next buy out.

What deals we sign, can we please do away with all the NMC deals? If we're talking cornerstones like McDavid and Draisaitl, sure - go ahead. Here's a NMC. As for the others, it should only be done if we are getting some massive concessions on cap hit, which we really don't seem to be getting. It really handcuffs the team's ability to jump on opportunities that might come up.

Every single forward still under contract that we signed has one. The only forward without one is Podkolzin who we didn't sign. Not sure about Frederic (man what a dumb deal if true)

What the hell did Nurse's agent have on Holland to get him to agree to those terms and structure? Dear god. As if the $9.25 and full NMC weren't enough, they tack on the ridiculous bonus structure making it buyout proof. A compliance buyout window would be nice right about now.

Skinner works fine if he is part a tandem. They need another guy that has a more proven track record and is more reliable than Pickard.

Pickard overachieved, but unless he is a backup behind a really strong #1, than you are probably relying upon him too heavily. And I'd argue, Skinner isn't a strong #1.

Would love to see Demko or Gibson brought in. Both have some injury concerns, but either a Demko/Skinner or Gibson/Skinner tandem should be an upgrade on Skinner/Pickard.

Would be nice to have a legit goaltending prospect within the system at some point here too.

(Skinner also just had a baby this year, which I'm sort of convinced derails a goaltenders game. We saw it with Talbot and Dubnyk, where they had a kid, struggled, were traded, and then became the goalies we need on other teams).

While the normal numbers we associate with goalies have been underwhelming, I believe a part of those numbers are the team in front of them*. There's only two ways I'm trading Skinner. 1) He asks for a trade (and who could blame him, if he did, with the scrutiny he's been under) or 2) If a perennial Vezina contender is a part of the return.

*Combined Skinner and Pickard were -2 in Goals Saved Above Expected throughout the playoffs. I don't think those two goals would've been enough to dethrone the Cats, even if you cherry picked two very specific saves. The team in front needs to figure out a way to give up less and create more against a team like the Panthers. Whatever they were doing was working against the other top teams in the league, but it didn't work vs the Panthers. Yet, as Connor has pointed out they kept trying the same things over an over all series.

He was a hot and cold guy. And as time went on he leaned more to cold. And dumb penalties in playoff games. But it's also hard to gauge because he did also get some big goals in big moments too. Enjoyed him as an Oiler, but it felt like time.

According to to hockey-reference his was 8.9. I don't know how much of that was specifically the Stanley Cup Final, but that was his career high. It was 7 when he carried the Panthers to the Finals 2 years ago and 5 with the Blue Jackets the year they swept Tampa Bay. Outside those years his playoffs stats aren't overly impressive. Based on his play alone we had a much better chance at winning in 2024 than this year, and if not for going down 3-0 I feel like we would have.

I was looking at the Oilers roster on Capwages (https://capwages.com/teams/edmonton_oilers) and one thing that jumps out to me is that we have stunningly few drafted and developed players in the organization:

On the main roster:
McDavid
Draisaitl
Nugent-Hopkins
Bouchard
Nurse
Skinner

In the System:
O'Reilly (1st rd, 2024)
Clattenburg (4th rd 2024)
Petrov (Rd 6 2021)
Akey (Rd 2 2023)
Kemp (Rd 7 2018)
Rodrigue (Rd 2 2018)
Day (Rd 6 2023)
Jonsson (Rd 5 2022)

Both Kemp and Rodrigue face the possibility of being cut loose as they're both RFAs and need qualifying offers. Of the 7 prospects, the last three are all goalies.

Comparing quickly to the other finalists, the Panthers have just 4 roster players that they drafted (Barkov, Lundell, Samoskevich & Ekblad) but 11 minor leaguers (and their farm team was just in the AHL Finals). Dallas has 11 home-grown players on their roster and 12 more in the system. And Carolina has 5 roster players and a whopping 18 in the system.

The Oilers have traded several picks over the last few years but so have the other teams at the top of the league. So what gives? Has our drafting just been that bad? There's definitely a good argument that that's the case. In the Ken Holland era, the Oilers made 25 selections at the draft. Of those, just Petrov, Akey, Jonsson & Day remain in the system, none of whom are yet to play an NHL game. We'd have rights on a couple of others but it's looking bleak. Only 4 of the 25 have played in the NHL. That includes Broberg and Holloway of course, who managed 69 and 89 games for the Oilers before the offer sheets. Then there's Matej Blumel who landed in Dallas eventually and has managed to get 13 games in the show over the last 3 seasons, and then Raph Lavoie, who had 7 games for the Oilers before getting claimed by Vegas last year and playing another 9. And that's it!

There were some changes to the scouting department after Holland was cleared out last year, but there's a pretty good argument that there should be no one left from that reign of error. Comparatively, Chiarelli had 27 draft picks in his time with the Oilers and of those 18 played NHL games. Now to be fair, Chia had more high picks and less top picks traded, but at the same time several depth picks have well over 100 NHL games.

That skew means that there's just not a lot of prospects pushing to make the roster here, so puts a lot more pressure on the team to recruit through free agency in Europe and college. And hopefully they can find a couple of gems in the four picks this week.

Recent first rounders

2017 Yamamoto
2018 Bouchard (yay)
2019 Broberg
2020 Holloway
2021 Bourgault
2022 Schaefer
2023
2024 Sam O'Reilly

Had they kept Broberg and Holloway your list would look a lot better. Bourgault and Schaefer are probably mistakes, but it's easy to blame covid for those two.

Second rounders

2017
2018 McLoed & Olivier Rodrigue
2019 Lavoie
2020
2021
2022
2023 Beau Akey
2024 Eemil Vinni

Thirds

2017 Skinner & Samorukov
2018
2019 Iiya Konovalov
2020
2021 Luca Munzenberger
2022
2023
2024

Everything after round 4 has just been a waste of time for the Oilers with the exception of Michael Kesselring (2018 6th).

Looks like the Oilers are not so good and draft and development and have believed they were close to winning since the 2020 draft which is fine because the draft is kind of a waste of time for them. That's my narrative anyway.

I do think Holland's most useful attribute was understanding the value of draft picks. 1st rounders are good to have a keep. The rest are pretty unimportant, especially once a team starts making the playoffs and the 2nd rounder drops into the late 40.

I don't believe in late round pick hype until I see it.
