4 Cups

Brendan Saad is available.. fast.. has some skill.. 32

Scored 26 goals with St. Louis last year.. regular 20+ goal scorer last 11 years.. not so good this year (7-9-16) ..

I figure he gave up the last year of salary because he's motivated to win.. likely wants a Cup contender.. one of which is Oil-Town

He's a finisher.. with speed.. could play top 6.. Arvedson.. J. Skinner .. were supposed to be that .. they've struggled..

Has ties with Bowman.

He would cost zero assets.

Interesting..

For the league minimum I would take him. Injuries are plentiful in the playoffs and sometimes you just need one guy to perform really well in a couple games to make a difference. He is the kind of guy who could do that.

I’m not against the idea of it, the only thing with all of these acquisitions like Klingberg is we should still target big fish at the deadline…although this year is a very weak trade deadline class. The biggest names are disgruntled Canucks. But more players tend shake out as the playoff picture becomes clearer.

My big question is A) what is the opportunity cost. You spend cap space, it means you have less left to spend on something else. And B) where is our biggest gap? He's a middle-six guy really, and there would be a bit of a log jam of real NHL players looking for a spot in the lineup. That's not a terrible situation to be in.

That said, where do we have the biggest need? I don't think it's another depth winger. Does signing him take away from our ability to add an extra goalie, or potentially another defenceman?

In theory, you could sign him to league minimum, stash him in the minors, then pull him up as playoff insurance.

He just forfeited 5M dollars not to play in the minors, so I think that’s out of the question.

Saad is expecting to walk back in to a new NHL job, so I don't think he's going to be excited about a role where he's parked for months.

I could see someone potentially waiting until the 4Nations to sign him, but I don't think he'd be going to the minors.

The Oilers would likely send Philp down for the time being if they were to sign him. The additional cap space would depend on what we sign him for. Klingberg got more than I expected he would and Saad walking away from a lot of money - I think he'll want $2MM per.

I think you'd try to argue to him that he comes on a 1-year deal, plays a role in a Stanley Cup run, possibly gets a ring and then can sign for bigger dollars next year.
