We play tonight! No idea who's in the lineup, but I'll be in the building...

You can try the Jets website, being held hostage behind a paywall by the Oilers.

Akey is chaos. Lots of raw talent there, but some questionable decision making.

Some good confidence carrying the puck, but some iffy decisions not moving it a couple of times. Hopefully that was a case of trying to do too much himself, and not an indictment of his in-game vision.
Increasingly thinking that Holloway peaks as a third liner, maybe with the ability to move up occasionally. It feels like it's been a long time since we've really seen any magic out of him. He was pedestrian tonight against a pretty weak Jets squad.
I'd forgotten that Caggiula returned. He looked noticeable in the first, less so after. Sutter was forgettable. Shot a lot from distance - but never threatened.
The actual NHL players still are noticeable, even going at half-speed. Oilers were pretty dominant when Nuge, Hyman and Kane were on the ice.
Rodrigue played well. The Jets goalie was even better. 29 year old journeyman with a career .897 save percentage. That's always our Achilles' heel.

Preseason games are such a waste. That lineup sure is something.
As long as they don't look 10-0 like the "Canucks" did last night

I can't see the games anyway so I won't be tempted.. (behind pay walls now)
I'll be curious in how Lavoie, Holloway and Hoefenmeyer do though..

I wonder what Ceci & Kulak did to pull the short straw.
Given that lineup, well, I don't like our odds tonight.

I've never understood the joke about Winnipeg being a hard place to travel to. It's a short flight and a 25 minute drive to the arena. This seems like an easy one day road trip where you're back home around one.

The hard part is that you have to be in Winnipeg.

Seeing line ups that the Oilers put out last game or this one, what the Jets put out or will put up, what the Canucks put out against the Flames. I really wish the NHL cut back the preseason and started the regular season a week or 2 early.
Realistically, the majority of the guys who play in these games have next to zero chance of making it. They are the Akey's of the NHL, the drafted guys getting their 1 game. They are career AHLers who have enough NHL games sprinkled in to technically count as a NHL vet. I guarantee that the 2 or 3 100% locks to be in the Oilers game 1 roster don't want to play this game, are not going full speed and are playing to just not get hurt.
I get for the NHL, they want the extra games for money especially in Canadian markets that charge their fans full price and get decent crowds. But you will see American teams playing in random rinks other than theirs and have tiny crowds rather than playing in their own rink and have it cost more to play the game than they make.

Trying to implement new defensive zone tactics, combined with vets putting in next to no effort in pre-season.
Doesn't seem to work out that well

I didn't watch any of the game, so I have no context other than this chart, but you would hope that Holloway would show up a little better in a contest like this.
Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games
2021 (82 game pace):269 GF / 235 GA (+34) after 38 games

Trying to understand this - so this means that the vets were decent offensively, but awful defensively? And almost everyone else was a non-factor?

yeah, most guys were meh in this tiny sample size. I think it's showing the vets were playing something closer to pond hockey. Lots of chances for, and lots against. How the chart is adding in relative defensive impact on the PK might not be fair. Not sure what it would be comparing to.

Maybe we need a longer pre-season with a pre-season playoffs to help it gain meaning. Playoff champ wins a free lunch.

I do like the idea of professional hockey having secondary championships. I'd love something like a Canadian championship that contested over the year during the season in games involving the Canadian teams.

Bruce McCurdy @BruceMcCurdy
Defensive zone omelette on the 4-0 goal, the F's chasing the puck as if they were doing a synchronized song-&-dance routine. The pivot, Carl Berglund, was especially guilty of wandering out of position, abandoning the goal scorer in the slot along the way.
Preseason at least provides us with lots of time to worry that this team is still terrible at playing defense in their own zone :)

Broberg and Holloway are two guys we really need to take a step. Not seeing much so far. Both guys have the risk of being another all speed and natural physical ability but minimal room for growth between the ears type of prospect. Hope it's not the case of course, but we are an org that has favoured raw physical ability over smarts/skill in the past.

I think you'd have a hard time to find any actual contender that have D chasing guys 30-40 ft from their net with zero cover. That was some total horsecrap, and Vegas laughed as they exposed us doing it over and over.
Woody and the gang need to be much better this year. Would like for once to have the coach that actually made the positive adjustments in a series.

Bouchard's body position has been noticable in a good way. Some bad luck to not have more goals. At one point we were outshooting Van 11-3.

Man I hate preseason hockey. Nothing but NHL regulars going 75% and watching PTO guys and AHLers crusiing around trying to light up guys to make a name for themselves. Then getting to see fans on social meeting freaking out because as example, the Oilers PP in game 3 of the preseason wasn't lighting up the Canucks. Was McD and Leon going 100% on the PP? I doubt it. Were they over passing? YES. I am sure they were trying to get puck touches. McD's face after scoing the OT winner said it all. He looked like he couldn't get off the ice fast enough because he knew it meant squat.
I wish it was 5 games.
Game 1 is your give the rookie his game game. You fill the team with rookies and AHLers and PTO guys. A barely 18 yr old having a bunch of NHLers on PTO's looking for work or 28 year old AHLers leaning on him is going to be more than enough of "welcome to the pros kid, here is how fast and strong we are" moment. I wouldn't worry about "NHL experience" make it pro hockey experience as the requirement.
Make some cuts.
Game 2-3, you sprinkle in a few vets to get the hands and feet going but again it's mostly AHLers and PTO guys. If a rookie is still looking good, he's in.
Make some cuts.
Game 4, you are playing mostly your roster. The guys fighting for your 12, 13, 14th forward and 7, 8th dman are in.
Game 5, is your full roster.
The Oilers have 5 more games, 2-3 of them are going to be primarily made up of AHLers with NHL regulars sprinkled in playing to try and not get hurt.
