Quote: |
The Edmonton Oilers announced today Noah Segall has been named the club's Video Coach and Mike Fanelli has been named Video and Coaching Analytics Coordinator.
Segall, 33, enters his second season with the Oilers and his first as the team's Video Coach. He originally joined the organization in 2022-23 as Video Coordinator, coming from the American Hockey League's Bakersfield Condors, with whom he served in the same capacity for two seasons.
Prior to his time Bakersfield, he served as a Video Coordinator with the AHL's Charlotte Checkers during the 2019-20 season. He also spent time working with San Jose's AHL affiliate, the Worcester Sharks, during the 2012-13 campaign.
…
Fanelli, 28, joins the Oilers from the United States Hockey League's (USHL) Sioux City Musketeers, with whom he served as an Assistant Coach the past two seasons. He helped the Musketeers capture the Clark Cup championship during the 2021-22 campaign.
A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Fanelli accrued NHL experience with the Tampa Bay Lightning from 2017-18 to 2020-21 when he worked in the club's analytics department for four seasons and won a pair of Stanley Cup titles.

Mike Fanelli??
I only accept online bloggers as legitimate analytics hires.
I kid of course. I suppose nice to see the org trying to augment the staff. Hope is leads to some better decision making!

Does this Fanelli have his own website where he does his own subjective advanced numbers that completely overvalue certain stats and under value other stats while telling everyone his are right and the rest are wrong?
I thought that is how it works in the advanced stats community.

What I really want to know is if this Fanelli guy is good at booking hotel rooms. Isn't that what the organization uses analytics for???

I think you're thinking about David Staples. He's...not the advanced stats community. He's an actual idiot. (One time member of Oilfans though!)

Analytics department for Tampa seems like a good thing right? Doesn’t seem like a warm body hire.
One can hope…

And for routes to arenas FROM those very hotels. It's really a double duty position.

My understanding is that some of Jeff Jackson's comments have sounded like they're suggesting our analytics group was perhaps lagging, and that he wants it to be best in class.
It's at least ten years behind when they should have made that realization, but if they've finally made it, then that's a real positive. Now, it's not clear what role this guy had in Tampa's group, but that group was doing a lot of things successfully.
Hopefully we're just a few months from seeing Holland and Nicholson out the door, and we can replace all the dinosaurs with someone more cutting edge. I didn't know what to make of Jackson early, and it's still pretty early, but this is a positive sign.

Soon after he left Tampa they go all in on Tanner Jeannot as their playoff secret weapon. I will twist this as a positive for us.

I notice they've won exactly zero Cups since he left Tampa!
