Sleepy first period by the Oilers again. The breakout strategy half the time looks to be the home run stretch pass. Camera shows D absolutely on an island in the D zone, not many with the wherewithal to carry the puck or complete a zone exit pass.

You always play a dangerous game when you feel your way in and sleepwalk through 1st periods. Pretty crappy that a veteran club does this over and over again.

The forwards force that 2-zone pass too often. Waaay too often. That is coaching. It's bad enough when 1 guy floats out there but many times 2 or all three are up there trying to pad their stats. This team is much more effective when 29/97 backcheck deep into their own zone.
Woodcroft should be tapping guys every time that happens...

Someone please tell fecking Darnell Nurse to tighten his chin strap. Never seen a guy's lid come off so often and so easy. Saavy vet there, right?

The team is looking like they need a week-long snooze. Just sleepy, lazzzzzyyyy play.

Apparently the All Star break wasn't long enough.

The Oilers look more concerned about having a warm glass of milk and a warm blanket, than trying to win this game.

It's a juggernaut, I tell ya! Can't manage enough to get a call, if they're waiting to win this on the PP, do something to earn a freakin call.

Is there any way we could somehow combine our goals for rate in front of Campbell with our goals against rate in front of Skinner??

Campbell - 4.16 GF/60 (3.66 xGF/60) - 3.28 GA/60 (2.75 xGF/60)
Skinner - 3.33 GF/60 (3.31 xGF/60) - 2.92 GA/60 (3.3 xGF/60)

Oh and L2 gets 5 seconds of O zone time and scores. Hyman scored so it's coming back.

Foegele had a solid bar across his legs into the crease, all he could do is fall over it. Oilers fan in me assumes this is called back though.

It's in the paint and Hart left the puck behind so it was an opportunity to deny another Zack Hyman goal.

2015 Darnell isn’t near as cool looking as 2023 Darnell. You need to be able to fit a water bottle between your chin and the strap. I swear Kassian can fit a 2 litre between his. Even cooler..

Had to perfectly hurdle that stick that the dman wedged into the goalies pad.

Enraging.

Not unlike Nurse blowing it wide at point blank range.

So I mentioned it before but I hate video review. I think it’s just taking goals off the board, never the opposite and it’s still a judgement call by the refs that they call inconsistently (“what would we tell Corey?”). Also, throughout the prior years, goalies weren’t precious darlings that couldn’t take even a tiny bit of contact - there was always some level of gamesmanship in bumping and annoying goalies, hopefully to the point where you don’t get penalized for it. Many like tonight are shades of grey anyhow where it is hard to say how much of the movement from Hart is his own momentum versus McDavid actually contacting him.

Offside is even stupider. Most of the time it doesn’t impact the scoring play at all, and is decided by inches. I’d rather have the frustration of the linesman missing a fast play than the frustration of having them twist themselves in knots to figure out a reason to count that Makar goal last year, or take off the similar McDavid one earlier this year.

Oilers didn’t play great and probably didn’t deserve the W tonight. And we made up ground on almost everyone anyhow, which is nice. But in my ideal NHL that goal isn’t reviewed and counts because the ref didn’t have the stones to call it interference on the actual play.

I’m probably not going to get my way on this but the league would be better for it if I did.
