The 2022-23 season is finally underway and we can leave the utter uselessness of the exhibition schedule behind us. Yes, I'm aware there are preseason games still to come and no, I don't care about them. As always we hope this thread will contain as few 3 point games as possible.
Something named Kiefer Sherwood scored the first goal of the season. He's available in 100% of Yahoo leagues.

One game overreaction: Calgary fleeced Florida in the turtle trade as Weegar looked great on D vs the Avs.

Calgary was absolutely given a gift home opener with the Avs playing the night before in Denver. That is terrible scheduling.

Think I saw that was the Lames first home opener win since 2009. Think that season went really well for them, so congrats to the Lames.

Just a thought.. with those programmable digital ad boards being used now.. do you you think there's any chance some team will program the ads so that there is a visual disadvantage to the visiting goaltender trying to pick up pucks ?? For instance, make the backgrounds of all the ads facing the visiting goaltender dark.. or even black.. so the goalie can't pick up the puck once its shot?
You could even have the ads change background colour depending on what end of the ice the puck is.. such as a power play.. predominately dark/black in the opposing team end during your PP, white on your PK.
Before programable ads, there was a problem doing this because the ads were static.. your goalie would face the same disadvantage at least once in a game..
Hope the NHL was smart enough to have rules regarding ad graphics and their effect on puck visibility, such as a limit on dark background colors.. if not.. its a perfect way to gain a subtle home ice advantage.
Just something that occurred to me.
If there are no rules on ads, bet the first team to try it would be TB!

Pretty sure the boards in the Arena have static ads and the digital ads are projected on by the TV people. Thats why the league wants it. Local, National, and league wide broadcasting rights holders can all separately sell the ads.

Seems like the team would make less from the rink boards. Is this a sign the TV deals haven't been doing as well as expected?

Makes more sense.. then home and away broadcasts can project their own home town specific ads.. if so the static ads must be worth less than before to advertisers.. if they are much less, maybe get rid of the static ads altogether, have clean white boards.

Gagner scores the GWG for the Jets opener vs the Rangers. Definitely prefer using guys like Shore and Malone to fill our roster though.

If the NHL was at all concerned with getting or keeping people watching their league they'd copy what the NFL does with injuries and who is playing for gambling and fantasy purposes. Now if you don't mind I'm going to the ridiculously bad daily faceoff site to see if Ottawa has decided to let us know Forsberg is starting.

That's kind of what I thought about it. Why am I paying big dollars for advertising on the boards if they aren't even showing up on TV? The league taking money away from the individual teams?

History was made today
Also, the Leafs lose at home to the Coyotes again, and I guess they haven't won a game at home vs the Coyotes in 20 years.

Great to see. Someone mentioned it on twitter, but the guy has carved out a really nice 2nd career as a bottom 6 forward. Good for him. Would also prefer that he did it on the Oilers, but oh well.
Oilers Goal Differential
17/18: 234 GF / 263 GA (-29)
18/19: 232 GF / 274 GA (-42)
19/20 (82 game pace): 257 GF / 254 GA (+3) in 64 games

Canucks extend that streak to 4 tonight.....4-3 OTL after leading 2-0 to CLB.

Looks like VGK are a bunch of filthy cheaters.
The penalties in the game were 6-4 for Vegas BUT Calgary took all of them in the first and third, while Vegas took every second period penalty. It must have sucked being on the far side of the rink for all 10 powerplays.

Super annoying how much he turned that franchise around. Hopefully they tune him out soon!

Lames players. Sutter will always be able to get in the ears of the refs and league overall. Only solution is he is fired

Bear + a player + 400K retained to the Canucks for a 5th rounder. I would be curious to know why they didn't just waive him first to see if someone would take him for the full salary. If it costs you an extra player AND you have to retain money just to get a 5th. That's next to nothing.

Pretty sure no one was going to pick him up on waivers for 2.2M.. probably been shopping him for a while.. Carolina had to add 400K + an AHL'er .. to get 1.8M in cap and a high 5th.. Carolina has more cap to add at forward.. Vancouver gets someone to plug some holes on D.

Canucks needed the salary retention to be able to take him. His cap hit was ~300k more than they could add.
5th is not that much. Cap space is at a huge premium now. Canes had to try to move him to a team that needed a RD.
Wonder if Bear is still struggling with the fitness stuff. Guess we'll see how he does in Vancouver. With Burns added in Carolina and Brind'Amour probably with zero tolerance for guys that aren't peak conditioned, his opportunity there went to zero.

I get why the Canucks needed the retention, I just would have thought that if as a team you basically had to pay the Canucks to give you anything by adding in another player AND retaining, you'd think you would waived him just to see. If you are having to give up another player and retain money just to move Bear and all you get back is a 5th, it's clear you aren't too worried about the return.
Good question about the fitness which seems to have been an issue a few times before assuming all the reports are true. Usually it's an automatic to play against your old team and he didn't even get a sniff against the Oilers. I saw that against the Canucks, the Canes played Coughlan and CHatfield, 2 righties, in their 3rd pair so I don't think you can blame the handedness on why he didn't play.
