We get Caleb Jones and a 3rd round pick back……Did the trade last year even happen? Aside from resetting the defensive contract structure for all the middle tiered defenders.

If I remember correctly, Jones was not exactly thrilled to be an Oiler.

AMAZING. Best news of the day.

Although I expect that the Oilers now blow the money on Evander Kane...

Giroux would be nice. Ottawa out on the Girioux sweepstakes after going in on DeBrincat? They still have space, but maybe internal cap stops them from adding more expensive guys.

Would be nice if we were to get that contract savings that was suppose to happen if he retires. But this is probably better for us then him playing. Just spend it wisely.

Cue NHLPA filing CBA grievance regarding the $3,438,462 in lost league cap..
Holland might have said he isn't pushing the issue .. but the PA likely will.
That's $3,438,462 that isn't in a player's pocket.

100%. This should be a big deal for the PA. And we should be outraged as well.

The PA would not be doing their job if they didn't complain. It's written in the rule and that is taking money out of the free agency pool. With the players OWING the owners money, I can't see how they'd be cool with that.

Since Keith was traded back to the Hawks, isn’t this just a moot point now? Or at least for the Oilers.

Isn't the important piece how we had him for 3.4M more cap hit than his salary? Or does that history just get erased by us trading him before July 13th?

Why the F wouldn't you push the issue? That overage covers a bunch of buyout money in a key season for the team. Why is every oilers GM terrible in so many ways?

It's like when Holland said he wasn't looking to trade up yesterday. Why wouldn't you at least say "we're exploring the idea" or that if the right player was available in a certain range you'd pick up the phone. Because he's lazy and doesn't want to put in any effort (and gave away every middle round draft pick until 2032).

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

But the Oilers also have a claim, and he could say that that was one of the reasons he thought this contract was attractive to take on last year at full value.

It doesn't really make sense to have the Oilers once again just meekly accepting another serving of gruel from the NHL - especially when we could probably use $3MM to add a nice piece.

He could.. but this is the better route.. the NHL can just make up rules (and routinely does) regarding its teams.. can't do that with the NHLPA

Well we have money to spend, no excuses to have any weak spots now.

Everything should be on the table to make the team immediately better. Money, picks, Holloways and Bourgaults etc.

That's $3,438,462 that isn't in a player's pocket.

100%. This should be a big deal for the PA. And we should be outraged as well.

Since Keith was traded back to the Hawks, isn’t this just a moot point now? Or at least for the Oilers.

Isn't the important piece how we had him for 3.4M more cap hit than his salary? Or does that history just get erased by us trading him before July 13th?

Who said he was traded?

I think you're misreading this. Gregor talking about last year's trade.

Also - it wouldn't matter. The fact he played here for less than his cap hit last year is what gets us the credit.

Also Gregor is bootlicking Ken Holland in subsequent tweets, suggesting that Holland intentionally traded for Keith knowing he'd retire and he'd get back the cap space that he only gave up because he acquired Duncan Keith...

Well we have money to spend, no excuses to have any weak spots now.

Everything should be on the table to make the team immediately better. Money, picks, Holloways and Bourgaults etc.

Actually this even more dangerous.. hard to overpay on contracts with money you don't have.. its cap enforced budget.. forced to grind out contracts.. now that they have the cap, this is where you need to be even better at cap management, and grinding.

Cue NHLPA filing CBA grievance regarding the $3,438,462 in lost league cap..
Holland might have said he isn't pushing the issue .. but the PA likely will.
That's $3,438,462 that isn't in a player's pocket.

Why the F wouldn't you push the issue? That overage covers a bunch of buyout money in a key season for the team. Why is every oilers GM terrible in so many ways?
.

Maybe he's letting the NHLPA do the dirty work.. they have the strongest legal claim

I think it's best if you are seen fighting for what's best for you. The NHLPA doesn't have the Oilers best interests at heart any more than the Oilers do, and so the remedy may not be in our favour.

Also, it opens up two fronts against the NHL on this.

Time to go “all-in”, Holland. Cup or bust!

Exciting times to be an Oilers fan.

But we could have won more than 8 games in the playoffs with the 2 leading scorers had we had 5.5 million to spend on a better defense.

Even if this was Hollands plan, it was still a bad plan.

I’m not saying just throw money wildly at holes. But there are no excuses. Retired Keith opens up paths to a better team than the one last year. If we aren’t a top team this year, failure.

No matter what, it is still a terrible, terrible trade. He could have been an all-star last year and it would be bad still, because Holland didn't understand the value of cap space, and he didn't understand the leverage available when the player was forcing a trade with only 1-2 locations possible. Even if we get the extra $3MM (that I don't think our team is smart enough to fight for), if we wanted Keith (which I don't think we should have) then we should have, in the words of Ken Holland, got him for free. Or better yet, made Chicago pay us to take him.

A great day.

The fact we were told upfront that there are no cap credits makes sense. There is no way we'd be the first team to figure out how to use that advantage if it actually existed.
