Lets start this off with a pretty significant trade.
Wild trade RFA Kevin Fiala to the Kings for their 2022 1st rounder and prospect Brock Faber.

That's not a lot for Fiala who had 33 goals and 85 pts but the Wild don't have any cap space with 12.7 this year and 14.7 the next few years in dead space. Fiala got 7.9 per year extension.

Bad playoffs for Fiala after a good season. Probably the odd man out for the cap dump.
Kings are really going for it now.

I guess with Kopitar turning 35 in Augusut and Danault being 30 this coming season. You don't have that many years left with your top 2 centers.

Minnie would have been over the cap with that 1 contract with other players to sign. It will be interesting to see what they do. I have to think others guys will be leaving when you have 12.7 of dead cap space.

Wow. MacT finally got an NHL level job with another org. I have to give the man a little credit. Took forever but he finally did it.

Ah yeah, I forgot. Rangers loved them ex oilers peoples still back then. Muckler HC after MacT joined. Then infamous Sather jumping ship.

Pretty smooth cap dump for Tampa, moving McDonagh to Nashville for pretty much nothing. Guy can still play. Somehow Nashville got him for free, which is not supposed to ever happen. Not even a conditional pick based on their playoff performance, wth!

Not only that, but Tampa gets a guy who has a cap credit if he's bought out...which of course they intend to do. Funny that Bill Daly hasn't tried to rule THAT credit out.

The Hawks man.
They are going to buyout Connolly and Borgstrom.
Connolly has 1 year left at 3.5 mill. I know they are getting rid of guys to tank but you still need live bodies to play the games and if your goal is to tank, it's not like Connolly is this huge impact player. So you buy him out and then have him on the books longer.
Borgstrom is a 24 yr old making 1 mill for 1 more year. If you don't like him, waive him. Maybe someone picks him up. If not, you and literally bury his whole contract in the minors.
Does the Hawks GM know the rules of the NHL CBA?

Yeah, this really starts to beg the question who is playing for the Blackhawks next season. If I am Kane or Toews then I am 100% asking for a trade, but both are so expensive that it probably can't happen until the trade deadline.

Some speculation the whole point of this is to push Kane and Toews to give the 'Hawks as much freedom as possible in trading them. Basically showing them that the team is going to suck, so may as well leave now.
Only issue is going to be the cap floor if those guys leave (although I expect we'll see 50% retention on both of them in order to maximize the return). Chicago's likely to start buying up dud contracts - especially ones with only a year or two remaining - just to gain more draft picks.

Kane would have a ton of value.. He put up 92 pts last year so I could see a lot of teams wanting Kane. Hawks would have to retain some but I think it wouldn't be that hard to trade him.
Toews I am not so sure there is a lot of value. He seems to have slowed down. Didn't play at all last year. Production is way down. Even at 50%, that's a lot for a him I think.

People believe he's the consummate leader, and the Blackhawks not only will be willing to carry salary, they will WANT to keep salary so as to avoid the cap floor and at the same time maximizing the return for these players.
I agree, the Oilers should NOT target Jonathan Toews. I think that's similar to getting Duncan Keith last year, a good player past his prime who brings "intangibles" that don't really make it worth paying him the salary costs.
I would take Patrick Kane likely...even though he's another questionable ethics-type player - and especially at half the cap hit. That would be worth next year's first round pick and a good prospect or two.

What if you 'Kucherov' Toews? LTIR for the year, hopefully comes back for playoffs.
Costs barely anything, surely he'd be better as a 3/4 C than whoever the oilers will have at that time, after all that's when you need intangibles.
(I don't think it's a good idea to bring him on, just like this conversation)

I would have been ok with the Oilers Kucheroving Keith. Defense depth is so important in the playoffs otherwise you end up playing very good players with broken hips who can't skate, shoot, moving, or skate. Yes, I said skate twice.

Sad thing for Jones is that he's signed until the end of time, so good luck getting someone to take that. Chicago isn't going to want to eat salary 3-7 years down the road, so he's going no where.
I'm guessing the plan is that you hopefully pick Bedard, you get a couple more first round picks for Toews & Kane in addition to all the picks from last weekend, plus Korchinski and Nazar from last week. Weaponize cap space to grab a couple more bad deals and get more picks with that. They already have 2 first round picks next year, and maybe could get as many as 5-6 in the end if they play it right. Then they build around that cohort, and if you're successful at getting Bedard then maybe you're good again by his third season in the league.

If Chicago does this right, they could be looking at making their first WCF with Bedard by 2030. That's the playbook for drafting generational talents, right? And, hey, at that point Jones' contract will be coming off of the books and they'll really be able to load up that offseason. Pretty savvy if you ask me.

It's nice that there is a handy recent example that should be easy to better than the prior few where teams were always contenders within a couple years. Pressure off for the Blackhawks!
Notable in all the buyouts, trades and failures to qualify - Caleb Jones DID get a qualifying offer. Apparently to Chicago he WAS more than just a body to even out that deal.

Sonny Milano and Brendan Lemieux are both free agents after not getting qualified. Decent numbers for Milano last year and he's only 26. Lemieux has an edge, but not a lot of points. 13 in 50 games last season, career high of 18 and he's never managed to play a full season. He's also 26 and I probably wouldn't pursue him unless he was a dirt cheap fourth liner.

I have a hard time believing he will live up to it. He has to put up the same numbers, 25 goals, 50+ points from here on out. I actually thought he might get a long deal like that for a gross overpay from some other teams. I didn't expect the Avs to do it.
