Nice start. Like I said last time - never start Russell again. I have no problem with 4K’s game, but if you must, bring up Broberg or Samorukov. Not much chance they can be any worse.

As for officiating, on McDavid specifically, more and more people are starting to talk about it.

Let go Kenny! Ring up Walkom and let him have it so we can be treated to a 200 McPoint season!

He’s making the case to keep the starter’s role when smith comes back. 2 more years???

So Chiarelli's last act as a GM may be validated this season, on the last year of the deal?

4.5m 3 yr signing date January 21, 2019.

The Oilers announced his firing on January 22, 2019.

I've never been a hater like some for Mikko. I have never thought he was a legit #1 goalie but I thought he was capable of being slightly better than your normal NHL back up. The big knock on him is he makes too much money but I never thought he was a crappy goalie like some think. After hearing the hardships he went through last season, I can understand to a degree why he was so off. So coming into this season, I thought with his personal situation a lot better, he would be better. I am also a big believer in the thought of your next deal being a big motivator for the huge majority of players. I do not think he thinks he will get as much as he is getting now but I assume he wants to stay in the NHL and to go a contract for next season, he had to play well. So I fully expected him to have a good season which for me was be in that .910-.915 range which in my opinion is what most decent NHL back ups give you.

So far he's exceeded my expectations and other than the Philly game, he's been excellent.

Kind of crazy to think he got zero Vezina votes last year. He's the Tyson Barrie of goaltenders.

We joke, but Koskinen is in fact 6-1 with a .934 S% with 7 consecutive appearances and part of the reason why the Oilers are on top of the Western standings.

The grain of salt is that Koskinen has started well in the past, but flags when overplayed. We can expect a correction there unfortunately. Also, the team leads the league in goals for per game, and it right up there in o-zone time. Helps any goalie. Seeing the Philly loss should remind us all that he probably isn't the guy to get the team to a Cup win.

Goalies, aside from maybe the top 3 in the world, remain totally unpredictable. Guy can seem like he has it all figured out one year and be total crap the next. Seems Smith is coming back, so at least Koskinen should be getting some rest soon. Would be awesome if Kostko can keep up this level of play. 1 bad game aside of course, but even the best have their garbage games. Vasilevskiy let in 6 vs Detroit, lol.

If the coach can just figure out a way to not ride one goalies for a half dozen times in a row all season I'd be happy. I think the goalies would be better off too. But what do I know?

Agreed, although with an NHL career with a 119 games and an average of .907 vs. a 7 game sample at .934, I tend to lean toward regression.

Agreed, although with an NHL career with a 119 games and an average of .907 vs. a 7 game sample at .934, I tend to lean toward regression.

For sure. I'd be happy with a 0.917 again. And just avoid those runs of 3-4 games of straight terrible.

If the coach can just figure out a way to not ride one goalies for a half dozen times in a row all season I'd be happy. I think the goalies would be better off too. But what do I know?

With these two goalies especially - where one has shown his numbers tail off significantly if he's overplayed, and the other is a grouchy senior citizen, you would think that the coach would figure out the best play is to actually run them as a 1/1A tandem - a couple games for one, then a couple games for the other, never play either back-to-back nights unless the other is hurt...but the last two seasons that hasn't been the playbook.

I suppose maybe the thinking is that you aren't likely to tag-team the goalies through the playoffs, so give both the opportunity to really take the ball and run with it...but I can't help feeling that's a bad decision with these two.

All that said, we're 8-1! Hooray! And now I came in to possession of a ticket to tomorrow night's game and get to decide how I respond to the whole Lowe jersey retirement. (Likely polite silence with limited clapping, to be honest, tempting as it might be to make sure he hears a few boos.)

well after riding coattails his whole career, maybe tomorrow night is the moment he finally owns up to the fact that Gretzky tipped the franchise's first goal.

Did anyone see Mikko having this kind of impact? I sure as shoot didn’t. Bra-vo Mi-kko!

Nope. But still a chance that Tip will run the wheels off the wagon.

I'll echo the sentiment about K Russell, over his head in 3rd pairing minutes. I think it's more than rust. Koekkoek is significantly better, and there are probably better options in Bakersfield.

How does Ekholm not get suspended 10 games for targeting McDavid's knee with a freaking CHOP BLOCK? One of the dirtiest plays I've ever seen.

Hey, they were going to call a penalty on the play, except there was a goal scored. It's tough for them to admit anyone should even get a penalty when they do something to him, so we should all be grateful and thank the referees in the last game.

More seriously it is crazy that this stuff happens and no one bats an eye. Makes me feel like someday McDavid is going to get a serious injury just because a play was doing something dirty trying to stop him...

Imagine if someone gave him a shove into the endboards as he was skating at full speed and it made him fall and break his collar bone? Or if a defenceman dove into his legs because he was walked around and it caused Mcdavid to crash into the net and ruin his knee? I know those two things would make the NHL take this matter seriously as there is no way they would just turn a blind eye to the best player of the last generation get needlessly injured like that

I almost thought I was in an alternate universe with the love for Koskinen here.
Yes, I'll give him credit for the hot start besides the one game, however he's burned us more times than I can count. He's been my least liked goalie in quite some time here.
While he's hot we should capitalize on that cus every other year shows the regression coming in hot, especially if he's playing too much.

You're worrying over nothing. The NHL is a multi-billion dollar business and they know the importance of their star players.

I blame the Oilers a little for not ever standing up to the league on this. The coach never says boo. The GM doesn't say anything. There's noise in the media about it, but if the Oilers just stay silent, it's easy for officials to take that as tacit acceptance that they're doing the right things.

Someone should go ballistic after a game talking about how ridiculous it is that guys just seem to go blind, simply because McDavid's really good. It's not the refs job to even the playing field for lesser players. The team has to grow a spine and realize that messaging is important and effective when done right.

Exactly, besides it's not like they couldn't pay the fine that would follow.. but small price to pay to get traction on something that needs to be dealt with.

I might do a special edition around Christmas and the Olympics, but I'm pretty overloaded right now. IF anyone has the urge to make it happen, feel free. It is kind of fun if you have some extra time on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday morning.

Next season though, I should have an extra 20 hours a week of time in my life! All things are possible then.
