Somehow I'm more afraid for the team now than when McDavid went down.

Sooooo...
William Lagesson comes back up?
Overpay at trade deadline for a D guy?
The return of...Brandon Manning?! Anyone?!

Hopefully they bring Lagesson up. I'd rather have an unknown with potential than a known net negative.

Agreed.
There is also Joel Persson who is doing well down in Bakersfield, and even Evan Bouchard if the D needs a little bit of a kick. Both right handed shots as well.
I just don't want some knee jerk reaction for a trade.

McDavid + Klefbom out at the start of the back 1/4 of the season... got to think Holland makes a couple moves to bolster the roster asap. Maybe Borowiecki + Ennis out of Ottawa for some late round picks?

Maybe experiment with Bouchard. Let him run the PP and play everyone up one slot.
Or let Bear take up the PP and let Lagesson in to the bottom pair. This past two weeks and the next three weeks ahead will definitely be our season’s “adversity” that will either makes us or breaks us.
No knee jerk reactionary trades please. Still dealing with Manning. Ugh.

If he's injured it can't be that serious, he was taking shifts right to the end.
Maybe McD plays D, doesn't have any wingers anyway

Kris Russell is apparently at this morning's practice and we should know by this afternoon if he will come off of IR.

He's had shoulder surgery , hopefully just a strain, probably AC joint getting cranked into boards.

Soooo...same shoulder as a couple years ago? Same injury?
Some big questions raised by this.
Lagesson was already with the team and practiced on the third pairing with Bear. This is definitely not ideal. February is going to be about survival for the Oilers...
For what it's worth, no to Borowiecki. He's 30 and his 18 points this year are already 7 more than he's ever got before. It's unsustainable. He's typically just another stay at home guy who doesn't do much to push the play. I'd rather we not add another Russell to the mix. Ennis...maybe. Still leery because he's 30 and always hurt, but he's got some skill. Could be a nice complimentary guy...if he stays healthy.

Ya, they're not ideal... but they're also cheap and on expiring deals, so one can walk away at season's end. Really a tough spot for Holland because there is still time to miss the playoffs, so you don't want to deal major assets for pointless rentals or pay the deadline premium for quality guys with term left; but if you don't do anything, the odds of missing the post-season go up substantially. Guy's like Borowiecki and Ennis are sort of a middle ground that could potentially provide just enough to make it through the current injuries (and potentially provide playoff depth over guys like Lagesson and Benson) without costing too much.

I think the team has to make a decision. Are we making a real push this year or not. Half-assing the deadline doesn't work - it sends a poor message.
Look at the two deadlines where the Oilers were in a position to do something over the last 13 years. In 2012, sitting in a playoff spot with 3 weeks left in a shortened season and knowing that one of our best players was secretly playing with a broken foot and another with a shoulder injury, we picked up Jerrod Smithson. The team immediately went in to a tailspin, crashing hard out of the race leading to the dismissal of both the GM and the Coach. Then in 2017, we had the GM publicly say that he didn't think the team was ready to challenge for a Cup. He backed that up by sitting on his hands come the trade deadline, other than moving Brandon Davidson for David Desharnais. Desharnais had 1-3-4 in 13 playoff games as a virtual non-factor (OT winner excluded) while Davidson's departure meant the Oilers needed to play both Gryba AND Reinhart in the deciding game against Anaheim.
If the management has no faith in the team's abilities - which would be ridiculous with the top two players in the league on the roster - then you may as well do nothing, and keep all the draft picks. If they think they have a chance, then get us a piece that can actually help.
I am skeptical of this year's chances because I don't believe in either goalie - but I'm not the one who signed those goalies. Management picked that tandem, so they should show more belief in them - or trade for a goalie that they CAN rely on to take them further (Lehner maybe?).

That's the crazy part about the big push to make the playoffs, injuries galore not just on the Oilers. Klef will be sorely missed. Hope it's not for as long as they predict.

We had a chat about Klefbom in the GDT a couple days back. I fear we are about to see just how good he is and important he is to all three zones of this team.
The drop off by moving every player up one spot is huge.

That's worse than the McDavid loss. The D was sooooo thin before. It's even thinner now. That said, the forward now also look like a rag-tag band of rebels, with a sole Jedi to lead them.
The forward lines are literally ridiculous, and either we didn't know what we had in Holland's summer pickups, or they all improved markedly.
The only name players currently active on the team (a somewhat know name, with a history of some NHL success)
Players:
Josh Archibald - No
Tyler Benson - Definitely No
Colby Cave - Less Than No
Alex Chiasson - Yes
Leon Draisaitl (A) - Yes
Sam Gagner - Yes
Gaetan Haas - Less Than No
Zack Kassian - Yes
Jujhar Khaira - No
Connor McDavid (C) - Not in Line Up
James Neal - Not in Line Up
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins - Yes
Joakim Nygard - Less Than No
Patrick Russell - No
Riley Sheahan - Yes
Kailer Yamamoto - Less Than No
Maybe overrippening happened quicker than expected?
Fired Pete too soon? I kid, I kid, he was the worst. Worse than Lowe, maybe not worse than MacT/Lowe. Worse than Tambo.

I'm sure Tippett will be using the blender against the Bruins tomorrow night. Going to be lot of second guessing the coach tomorrow night about this lineup. He's stuck working with what he's got.

Nuge is more of a second liner and Yamamoto, is more of an AHLer.
Fair, they have been playing like a top-top line, and maybe they’ll continue to do so. But, there are a lot of top lines in the league I prefer to this one, and when you pair it with a second line that should really be a third line, that makes a pretty tenuous top six.

I would have agreed that Yamamoto is a career AHL'er before he was called up, but he has proven that he belongs in the NHL. He has shown real tenacity, never giving up on getting and controlling the puck. For years I was frustrated watching the Oilers handle the puck like a hot potato, giving it away when the opposition would come within ten feet. Yamomoto is not cut from the same cloth.
I think Nuge is more of a winger than a center, and will probably fall back to the second line with Draisaitl and Yamamoto when the McDavid crew comes back. Still good to know that Nuge gets going and thrives when he has stable line mates and is healthy.
Khaira doesn't seem to be taking advantage of this opportunity to show his stuff like Archibald has. I would classify Khaira as trade bait and maybe a guy who could do okay with a change of scenery - maybe.
