Boourns.

Hate these easy goals we allow while we have to grind for every millimeter we get.

Welp. Guess that loser point is important. 2 games on hand.

Flames own the tiebreaker if we finish dead locked with them.

As soon as Drai came up in the shootout I knew there was no way he was going to score. He had no energy left in OT. Kind of wish they would have gone with someone like Kassian or Yamamoto even. Oh well, it was a fun game to watch, even if the bad guys won.

Between that and the Kneeordano, this team better do Whatever It Takes Saturday night to get a regulation win.

Angry Nuge was by far the highlight of the night. I love seeing angry Nuge.

Tkachuk's fight where he makes no effort to have any balance and just flops around to avoid having to actually fight was lame.

Good lord, Leon still gassed from OT. Hes more effective if his shifts are mitigated a bit. Awesome player but his shifts can't be that long. Posts by Nuge and Connor, beat Rittich but still misses. Rittich with the showboat after nice pokecheck on kind of a lethargic effort by Drai there.

Oilers were lucky to get a point. Benning had a shaky game up till he scored Sloppy giveaways all game long.

I'd say Giordano has something coming to him, he's a dirty pylon. I hate the Flames, all of them.

Crappy result, but big loser point. Too bad we squandered that PP at the end of the 3rd.

Not sure why they didn’t go with McDrai to start OT.

And I LOVED Gagner’s game tonight. And that move? That goes in, that’s probably goal of the year.

Anyway - entertaining game. Need a better result Saturday.

Gagner was good tonight - feisty.

I also liked Khaira. Enjoyed the run he took at Big Buddy.

I'm a little worried about Larsson - seeing some signs of decline from him lately. He's just not where he was when he first came over.

To me he’s like that car you just know the transmission or motor is going to die. Need to get it on Kijiji because it won’t make another winter.

That move by Gags way better than the weird little toe drag coming down the left side that we've seen 150 times but never worked.

Calgary will be dirtier at home on Saturday. I'd love to see 5's knee turned into a universal joint. What a POS.

Larsson is turning into a pylon. Watch him carry the puck in his own end, sloppy, plodding, doesn't bother to check over his shoulders when his back is to an opposition player, turns blindly with the puck.. cough-ups and scoring chances against ensue.

Him and Klefbom together are dangerous.

Draisedal looking like a Domino's delivery man tonight.. lots of hot pepperonis served up on a platter.. his passes were clanging off everything.. his problem was he wasn't moving his feet, he'd hang on to the puck coasting, until he had no time left, then tried a low percentage hope pass, with expected results, puck was going the other direction from his turnovers all night, the Pillsbury Dough-Boy would be proud of those.

No intensity. Looked like he had just stepped away from Christmas dinner.
Needed to get a hand full of those smelling salt capsules and put it in a bag ..along with his head.

That Yamamoto kid is impressing me, I didn't believe he could play in the NHL yet, but he outplayed LD tonight, and has been solid every game so far, consistent effort, works his butt off every shift, makes things happen, gets pucks, retains pucks, and gets scoring chances.... plays smart. Another pleasant surprise for this season, along with Bear.

No surprise Tippet put Yamo on with McD in OT instead of LD, LD looked awful all night, like he was on a bong for the last 10 days (or the flu?). rasta

That’s crazy. Bobby Mac was the one that broke it. I’d expect a leak like that to come from one of the smaller, local guys like Specter or Rishaug.

My take, Bob Nicholson.
BN: “Oh boy, Battle of Alberta starts in 3 hours. How amazing would it be if we announce the Kassian extension before the game! The fans will absolutely love this and we’ll be praised for the contract length and term!”
KH: “Let the players focus on the game, they don’t need the distraction. Announce it tomorrow.”
BN: *texting Bob Mackenzie* “Sorry Ken, what were you saying?”

The Oilers looked rusty, especially the PP. Not playing for 11 days will do that. That being said I was happy with the effort. Rittich kept the Flames in it as I thought as the game went on, the Oilers were the better team. A couple of inches the other way and they win with the 2 posts in the shoot out. Rittich acting like he just made the cup winning save was a bit much considering he got burned badly twice in a row and the post saves his ass was a little much.

"Classy" Gio sticking the knee out on McDavid. Just like him taking his feet out last year, I am sure he didn't mean t do it. icon_rolleyes

He's not a big impact player but I was pretty disappointed in Khaira. For a guy who's give a damn is in big time question and you have sat out the last 3 games. I thought coming into a divisional game, with a provincial opponent, given all the hype and from the drop of the puck, to my surprise it was an emotion, physical game, I expected Khaira to be somewhat noticeable. Guys are running around hitting everything, hell McDavid even hit guys. Gagner was catapulting himself into guys. Nuge of all people, 184lbs soaking wet Nuge who's Khaira's buddy is squaring up for a fight right in front of the Oilers bench and they weren't hand fighting, they were trying to throw BOMBS especially Nuge. Then Tkachuk picked a fight with Kassian. Rinaldo is screaming at Kassian that he is next up to fight.

If EVER there is a game that should have gotten Khaira fired up and want to show everyone he gives a damn it should have been that game. I expected him to be running around hitting everything that moves. You have Rinaldo dying to fight, go pick a fight. He's not out of your weight class what so ever. THEN Gio sticks out the knee on McDavid. Next shift, GO after him!! Show your team you care. He's should be fighting for his job, show a pulse.

Take away that unlucky bounce and it’s a win.

And you know what would have taken it away? Starting McDavid’s line.

The Oilers were what, a 3-4 inches combined on the Nuge and McDavid's posts from winning as well. Calgary looked like a team that had already played and knocked the rust off.

No surprise Tippet put Yamo on with McD in OT instead of LD, LD looked awful all night, like he was on a bong for the last 10 days (or the flu?). rasta

We've seen it before from Leon, he's removed it from his game before, then it creeps back in. Hopefully this is just a blip and we dont see a stretch like this. Shift length for the guy is critical. Everyone has off games but it's bad when a guy that holds the puck and distributes it a lot has one. I think Leon was one of the 3 stars as well, so there's that.

KY hasn't given any indication that he doesn't belong.

Nuge was trying to throw BOMBS. I couldn't believe it.

I was kind of scared for an aggravation of the wrist, actually.

No one should ever fight Rinaldo. The Oilers are literally better off with him on the ice.

I thought Khaira was quite good. He was physical and he came in for his teammates when scrums started. No issue at all with his game. As mentioned, he even took a run at the biggest Flames player on the ice. I don't need him to fight in order to give him a thumbs up on the night.

Giordano - I'm curious if the league does anything. I expect they won't but they really should. It's literally the same play the same disciplinarian suspended him for last year.

Listening to Strudwick this morning talk about Khaira, he would disagree with you as would I. Archibald who is tiny has 7 hits and some were big ones. Nuge doesn't touch anyone and had 1 hit and a fight. Yamamoto who's a borderline little person had a hit, Gagner had 2.

Khaira is 6'4, 212, is a bottom 6 guy who's in the league because he's big, can skate a little and supposedly plays with an edge. He's not in the league to score goals. I expected him to be running around. I definitely expected him to be running around hitting everything that moves and stirring the pot after sitting for 3 straight games, this not being the first time he's been scratched, playing in an emotional game when his NHL career is hanging in the balance and his passion and commitment level is being called into question. He had 3 hits, OK. Was he seriously noticeable? I watched the whole game and I sure didn't think he stood out. I noticed Gagner. I sure noticed Nuge. I sure as heck noticed Archibald. Chiasson scored a goal, had a few hits and was mixing it up with Rittich. Yamamoto was very noticeable. What did Khaira, a guy fighting for his job do other than not give up a 5 start give away?

For Gio. With Parros head of discipline in the house and Walkom head of officiating in the house. Given the fact last year whether he "didn't mean to" hurt" McDavid. When you take a guys legs out when they are going full speed causing them to lose all ability to control yourself or stop yourself and you are at the mercy of whatever you ram into. Something bad will happen and something bad did happen. Then last night he fires out the knee as he's getting burnt in an effort to take out McDavid's leg. When you do that and make contact, something bad usually happens and the fact he's done that before several times to other guys, you'd think they would at least talk to Gio. But I highly doubt it.
Gio is a prominent player so he gets a free pass at being cheat.

I thought Drai did a lot in that game. Just couldn't get one in. Rittich was definitely on his game last night. Drai with 2 assists 0 +/- and played 27 minutes.

Mike Kelly @MikeKellyNHL
Leon Draisaitl is one of eight players in the NHL with over 100 end-to-end rushes this season (skating puck from DZ into OZ). He had a game-high 8 last night. This was a beauty...

Splitting McDrai in OT was probably a change because of how those 2 guys were getting owned in like 3 straight OT's because teams were just waiting until they were 1.5+ minutes into their shift and refusing to change to take advantage. Both of those OT lines got chances. THey probably need to work on practicing it more now if they are splitting those guys and letting more forwards participate. We were throwing possession away far too easily. Good OT teams control until they can create a solid chance.

Agreed - his whole career here we're going to hear people talk about how he doesn't look in to it - mostly because he's got a long stride, but he had two points and was involved in a tonne of chances.

I didn't mind the look with the two guys broken up. Challenge before has been that Neal or Chiasson was not a great 3v3 player, so whoever was out second was challenged, but with Nuge & Yamamoto, there's a little more speed to burn and both those guys have some talent. I thought while the Flames had a couple chances, the Oilers dominated the overtime despite having McDavid and Draisaitl on different units.

I don't think we ever HAD to play McDrai all OT. We could try Kassian, or Archibald if we wanted. Just, McDrai worked well early on and those guys think they can play super long shifts and find an opening late if they can catch another teams line being stuck out and the coach was letting them try. Didn't work for a while though, so it's time to mix it up. Lots of teams have guys that aren't super skilled getting some OT shifts, and they do better than we did the last few OT's where we just took a nap and let McDrai burn themselves out and get caught late in their shift. Got too predictable.

I do give Tippett credit. He seems to be slowly resisting the lazy McDrai dependency that McLellan had basically his entire time here. He's going through the same little bumps but he's actually adjusting a bit, unlike Todd. Certainly Yams made it a bit easier, but I don't think he was a pre-requisite to getting away from what obviously wasn't working.

The fact that both are starting to see some success without the other is a good thing for the team and one of the reasons we're still in the race right now. It's just too easy to try to neutralize a single line for 18-20 even strength minutes a night. If you have two lines clicking with a superstar on each, then suddenly it's a 35 minute problem for other teams to deal with. Having the depth be not a complete sinkhole lately hasn't hurt either.

I still think there's some big weaknesses, both in goal and on the wing and to a lesser extent on defence too, but they've been better with Draisaitl on one effective line and McDavid on the other.

I think Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins both are guys who need someone else decent to play with - they are neither going to excel playing with scrubs. McDavid makes even scrubs produce.

Joakim Nygard could be out long term if he has a broken bone after blocking a shot (hand or arm, we believe). GM Ken Holland could call up Tyler Benson, but what would still be missing is Nygard’s speed. Could change GM’s deadline approach.

Unfortunate to hear about Nygard, but really Spec? Losing a guy with 3-6-9 in 32 games is going to change the team's approach to the trade deadline? doh
