And once again....

But does sound like a decent prospect with some good upside, its just hard to get past the nepotism in this organization.

Oilers trade 3rd rounder (#71) and 5th rounder (#133) for a second round pick (#62) to choose Olivier Rodrigue.

Apparently, his dad works for the team, so of course.

His dad is a goaltending consultant.

So nepotism aside, this is a good move. Trading two later picks to jump into the second to take the top rated NA goalie.

That's the NFL draft move.

Agreed, very NFL type strategy. As far as Rodrigue goes, I have no opinion, goalies are always to to project and a lottery ticket.
I am not a fan though of giving up picks. Almost every pick after the first round is a lottery ticket and I am of the opinion that more tickets is better.

ETA; just saw him in an interview, holy heck is he small. I skipped his size in NetBogs post and even 156 looks like he weighed in with bricks in his hands. Not sure how he fills much net unless he packs on some size.

The Oilers traded 2 picks for the son of a guy in the organization who plays a crapshoot position that is tough to project.

Sounds like the Oilers.

Originally I thought they must be trading up to try and pick Jake Wise. Nope. Goalie, and his dad is an Oilers consultant!

Goalies are just wildcards, so I'm not crazy about picking them high, much less moving up to do so. That said, this again, isn't off the board, it was kind of close to where some people had him.

The Oilers Dad connection won't play well, and for good reason. Lowe, Musil, Acton... they've always made the organization at the expense of better players. But it sounds like this is a reasonable prospect in his own right. Even if it is nearly impossible to judge goalies at 18. Still, I personally probably wouldn't have picked a goalie at this spot, or given assets to do so.

Not sure why with Skinner coming.. Talbot not in the long term plans?

He IS a good goal tender though, was selected for this spring's U-18's and was rock solid, looked great.

I'm disappointed about not seeing the other 2 picks just for the curiosity, and someone to follow, the Oilers have been pretty good at those mid rounders lately..

Mightyreasoner is right, Goalies are wild cards, so there isn't much to read from minor league performance.

Nevertheless, Olivier Rodrigue does seem to be holding his own in Drummondville. Hope he gets a chance someday to become overripe in the Oiler system.

Impressive. Yeah - last I heard on this guy was that he was having a real rough go. Maybe he'll be good to go on Koski's final year to then be subsequently signed for 3 years at 5.75 (the equivalent cap percentage hit) fishing

I think Starett and Skinner are doing well in the minors as well, goalies are an enigma, not a bad strategy to get as many lotto tickets as you can.

I haven't watched them play, but the number don't look great:

Skinner:
ECHL, 30 games, .906 save percentage, 3.20 GAA
AHL, 4 games, .879 save percentage, 3.25 GAA

Starett:
ECHL, 1 game, .963 save percentage, 1.99 GAA
AHL, 19 games, .907 save percentage, 2.59 GAA

Wells:
ECHL, 13 games, .913 save percentage, 2.84 GAA
AHL, 9 games, .902 save percentage, 3.01 GAA

Hawkey:
NCAA, 23 games, .905 save percentage, 2.09 GAA

To be honest, Rodrigue might be the only one trending up.

The guy I'd like to see them take a run at as a free agent is Cale Morris in Notre Dame (19 games, .924, 2.37). It would likely mean not signing Starett and/or Hawkey though to open a position.

Worth noting that the team also has four scorers in the top-12 in the league, so has Rodrigue been great, or is he just playing for a great team? So hard to tell with goalies because team performance impacts their stats so much.

You can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find, you can get a lottery pick.

If you were to chart save percentages and team performance, I think you'd see a pretty high correlation. The challenge is deciding which impacts the other more. Is it simply that you need good goaltending to be competitive, so a drop in save percentage can sink your team? Or is it that bad teams will surrender more good chances, which hurts those teams' goalies' numbers? I suspect both things are true to a point, but it means that goaltending is the hardest position to evaluate from a numbers perspective.

The numbers on all these guys is fine. The ECHL guys struggle a little to adjust to the AHL but they'll be fine. I'm assuming the goalie plan in Edmonton is to run with Starett as the backup to Koskinen next year with maybe a 'C' level veteran playing backup in AHL.

I would bet money that the Oilers sign a back-up rather than gamble with Starrett on the NHL team. Only one season in the AHL, and his numbers far from stellar. There will be better options available this summer.
