The Oilers have landed a highly-regarded NCAA free agent, agreeing to terms with forward Drake Caggiula on a two-year, entry-level contract.
Read Full Press Release

Caggiula played four years at the University of North Dakota, scoring 25 goals and adding 26 assists as a senior this year, finishing second in team scoring behind Vancouver Canucks prospect Brock Boeser.

The talented and speedy 21-year-old is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound Pickering, ON native who helped UND capture the NCAA title last month, scoring two goals in their 5-1 national championship win over Quinnipiac.

I love this player! Extremely talented but small. Not exactly what the Oilers need, but a great "free" add to the organization. (if true)

This guy doesn't play small though, he's very physical. He's a good skater with endless energy and is a good penalty killer. Has very good hands in tight, a very smart player. If he signs with Edmonton, I will be very excited.

Drake Caggiula is, in fact, bound for EDM.

No official confirmation from the Oilers yet, but Bobby Mac is a fairly trusted source. My expectations for him are not as high as a certain college FA who signed with us a few years back, but he should still be a solid forward.

Small, skilled left hand shot forward. Can't seem to find anywhere that says which forward position he actually plays. Might not seem a great fit, but our prospect cupboard at forward was pretty bare and his numbers are fantastic. People will talk about Arcobello and Miller as other high-end forwards who we signed out of college, but they were point per game players. Caggiula had 51 points in 39 games so I'd say just based on that he looks to be well ahead of those two.

And I think this is the source for most of the reports saying he's a done deal with the Oilers:

Someone explain to me why a small left-handed forward would sign with Edmonton?

Somewhere I read that he had the chance to play with McDavid with the Eerie Otters and chose NCAA instead. Guess he's not passing over that opportunity a second time.

According to a Philly reporter, Edmonton wasn't high on his list, but he visited the city and loved it, saw the new arena and loved it, and eventually chose to sign here as a result.

And to be honest, no one should really be complaining about Arcobello and Miller (Arcobello especially). Not only did both guys help the organization by helping the AHL club, they got real NHL games out of them, without spending an asset. They've had as much success with college free agents recently as they have in the later rounds of the draft.

I'm good with it. I'm not very satisfied with the organizational depth at any position, and forward prospects might be the worst of the bunch. Adding another quality prospect isn't any guarantee, but it is a good decision. It would be absolutely great if he become a Gallagher / Shaw type player, but if he can help the AHL team win and be a guy pushing for an NHL job and perhaps providing some talent in the bottom-six in the NHL, what's not to like about that?

New management, new message? I have no idea. I'd stay away unless I thought it was the only way I'd get NHL playing time.

It's unlikely that Caggiula even plays on the big squad at the start of the season, never mind with McDavid, but I do think we're going to see players sign on so they can be part of a team on the rise...trying to time a championship.

Also, if you're a 21 year old forward and you look at the Oilers depth chart outside of the NHL, you know that you're going to be better than 90% of what we've got - which makes you highly likely to be one of the first recalls and gives you a chance to at least push for a job out of camp.

Despite the rep for not landing the big fish in free agency, the Oilers have actually done pretty well of late, and we've been hearing this sort of comment going all the way back to Eric Belanger. There was an episode of "Oil Change" where he talked about his reasons for choosing the Oil.

Hopefully, McDavid can inspire a new level of player to make Edmonton their hockey home.

Don't be so sure, I think he's a real good bet to make the team. He brings a lot of the things this team needs like aggressiveness, PK, speed, physicality, he's small but he plays big. No guarantees, obviously, but I watched him play for four years at UND and am a big fan.

Actually, you should probably just ignore my thoughts on him, I'm very biased. I was also huge on VandeVelde and Chorney too...(who both played playoff games for other teams this season, albeit)

Good to see Cags continuing to play after having been traded away by Pistol Pete for a bag of used jockstraps.

How 2020 would it be if PistolPete would rejoin the Oilers in an advisory role?

I shudder..

Drake was a decent player for this team to be traded for..... what... giggles?

Would be a great hire IMO.

Ask his opinion. Do the opposite. Hard to hire that kind of reliability.
