There probably will some good lessons in organizational culture to take away from all this. Namely, how when a certain ethical standard or expectation is compromised, how quickly that can lead to more compromises and ethical standards being ignored.
It's not that I don't believe in second chances, but I'm not as sold that every one deserves to be platformed at the highest level if they have a toxic past. Should MacTavish have been given a second chance? Maybe not. But that was a different time, and to his credit, he was genuine in his contrition and has held himself and those around him to a high standard ever since. Today? I'm quite certain I wouldn't want someone with a DUI manslaughter conviction on the team. I think that's okay. Players get blackballed all the time for being "weird". For liking museums too much. For being quiet or awkward. I'm perfectly fine if they aren't getting future opportunities for past toxic behaviour.
It's just wild to me that the Oilers are so clueless about reading the room and taking the temperature. Like Adam said, maybe – maybe – you can make an argument for a player that really moves the needle and makes a difference (I still hold the belief that you can have a successful organization without that baggage, but at least you understand it). But for this player? The amount of reputational damage, the amount of embarrassment and shame it brings to the fanbase and the city, the disrespect to all the women who cheer you on, the blowback is justifiably enormous. It was never going to be worth it, but I guess they are that out of touch.
Which brings me back to organizational culture. Our owner at the top is pretty sleazy. This led to Stan Bowman and Mike Babcock. This now leads to Alex Formenton. Maybe they see something of themselves in each progression, another "redemption arc", but eventually these reclamation projects morph the culture and standards of an organization. They aren't coming into a culture to be changed; they themselves are changing the culture. It's why culture is hard to create and easy to lose. I do fully expect that this chapter closes with the Oilers having two of the greatest players to ever play the game, having zero championships to show for it, and an alienated and disgruntled fanbase heading into another Decade of Darkness.
Daryl Katz. Stan Bowman. Mike Babcock. Jake Virtanen. Brandon Manning. Evander Kane. Alex Formenton. It's honestly pathetic.
