At least the first two swings at the garbage tree were actually good at hockey with Perry and Kane. Are Bowman, Babcock and Formenton even good at their jobs? Real diminishing returns here as we keep going back to the scumbag well.

Excellent PR moves; very good for the Oilers brand. Such a well respected organization we have here as we head into the final full year of the McDavid era.

I have some tough news for you.

Other athletes and celebrities in their teens/20s with insane amounts of celebrity/access/money have done similar things. Doesn't make it right or wrong but you should probably stop watching sports if that's your line in the sand.

Babcock was/is treated the way he has been because he was mean to "journalists" in Toronto. Nothing more.

Kane did nothing wrong. No idea what happened with Perry but humans do dumb things sometimes and I couldn't care less if a hockey player got drunk and said something inappropriate.

As for is this player any good - fair question and I don't think anyone really knows but I guess we will find out. Scored 18 goals in the NHL and is 6'3. That's something.

The Oilers haven't ventured into the PWHL yet, but if we had a team no matter what the result of the case was, do you think the women playing on that team would want Formenton in the same club as them??

Why would the imaginary opinion of imaginary PWHL players matter? Because they are (imaginary) women?

Would the Oilers players get to have a say on who was allowed to play on this PWHL team based on how they feel about each players sexual history? Maybe they should get to weigh in on weather or not "EM" should be allowed to work at her current job.

Then again she likely doesn't need to work much. You know because of the massive settlement she received for cheating on her bf with a bunch of hockey players and lying about it.

Now that we've had the incel opinion heard from and out of the way, let's think about this from a few other viewpoints:

1) Fellow incel David Staples will repeatedly urge people to read the judge's summation on the trial and why the Hockey Canada guys got off. I'd argue if you want to understand character of these folks, you should look at the actual transcripts of all the testimony, because it shows that whether there's enough for a criminal conviction or not, there's AT BEST some extremely iffy judgement on display, and for a few of the players, some lack of morals shown. From a moral point of view, this is a bad decision by the team.

2) This isn't likely to do much for the team's likeability with fans. The team should be conscious of that because we are looking down the barrel of a future without McDavid and without being one of the top teams in the league. If we get there, we're going to see significant drop in interest so finding new ways to ostracize fans, such as taking on players with reprehensible moral records, isn't a great idea. From a business point of view, this is a risky signing at best.

3) There may be some cases in which you can look at the moral and business side and say that you understand all that, but Player X is too good and winning now is too important to let those override. There's an argument you could make with the potential impending departure of McDavid that you NEED to win now, so if a player is one who helps you win, then you may want to overlook some of the other complications. You could potentially have used that to justify Evander Kane, although his demons included being a bit of a locker room issue and he ultimately got to the point where he was a distraction here for some of the reasons that were predictable when he was brought in.

But let's have a quick look at Formenton. He hasn't been in the NHL for 4 years - before that he only played in 109 games over four seasons, picking up 39 points. Last year in the Swiss league, he had 23 points in 42 games - good enough to be the 5th highest scorer on his team behind Chris DiDomenico (27 Career NHL games, 10 pts), Michael Joly (0 NHL games), Dominic Zwerger (0 NHL games) and Jesse Virtanen (0 NHL points) (no relation as far as I can tell to other Oilers misadventure Jake Virtanen).

Like with Jake Virtanen, this is one where the upside is so low that it doesn't really make any sense to override the other concerns in order to bring this guy in. What is it about this player that makes him seem like any kind of good bet? He's potentially going to get booed at home (I mean, I certainly will boo him, for sure in pre-season) and the team is going to get crucified on social media and around the league for this decision and for what? He's not even a good player.

And if you want a forward, there's a ton of them still available. Marcus Johansson had 49 points for the Wild last year. Vlad Tarasenko had 47 points and has had a great career. David Perron put up 28 points last year, and might come fairly cheap at age 38. Michael Bunting, James Van Reimsdyk, Tyson Jost, Philip Kurashev. Reilly Smith. None of those are top line guys but most of them would bring more than Formenton without any of the baggage. It's just a bizarre decision by the team.

It's a bad hockey decision, it's a bad business decision, and it's a bad moral decision. The only people who will celebrate this are the incels like David Staples and Jay who think that it's immediately good, only because it annoys anyone with any kind of non-caveman point of view.
