I've been reading a lot of comments online about how anyone could have won a cup with some of the teams he coached. I feel like that could be said about some of the McDavid era Oilers teams too - some pretty incredible rosters outside of goaltending - and yet it never gets done.
If Babs pulls it off, it'll be pretty epic.
I still maintain he doesn't last more than a season. It'll be an entertaining circus ride regardless.
Any word on the terms of his deal? I wonder if he squeezed Daryl for the full 5x5

I think there is another tier of what the wings had with Lidstrom/Yzerman/Zetterberg/Datsyuk/Chelios, and toss in guys like Kronwall, Rafalski, Holmstrom, Draper. I'd actually question why that team didn't win more than they did in the 2000's. Big choke job against us in there.
We had 3 guys basically, carrying a whole group most of the time, with some huge weak links that were trying to kill us the whole way. Sadly, the weak links caught up to us in the end, either by themselves, or because our top guys were just dead from exhaustion by the final round having to carry the group through 3 rounds.

Apples vs oranges comparison there. Wings spent to the moon, no cap. The Rangers spent even more at times with no success at all in the 2000’s. It’s not as simple as some assume to win a cup. With some better injury luck we could have won 2.

I agree, it is apples to oranges.
You just straight up expected cups from those red wings teams. And they stacked points every year in the regular season. I forget all the reasons they had every year they bombed out, but there were some major choke jobs among them, some under Babcock, one was against Babcock's Ducks team.
With our team, we kept having these weird seasons with huge runs of underachieving. We got some insane individual performances and a bit of luck to get to the finals. The only reason anyone expects us to win is because of a couple big names we have. Everyone knows the weaknesses that our management could never address. These were not deep amazing teams we took to the playoffs, they were teams that needed a couple guys to go supernova for us to go on a run and have a shot. We got some good luck to make the finals, including Dallas doing their own choke job against us 2 years in a row, but a little dose of bad luck, and simple reality catching up of how poorly built our team was made us fall short. The red wings had multple lines and D pairs of HHoF quality guys.
My original post was replying to the idea that Babcock should get more credit for the red wings cup he got, because it should have been similarly easy for a coach to win a cup with our McDavid era teams and the coaches we had failed. I don't agree. Our teams were far more flawed than what Babcock got to play with in detroit. This is going to be far more difficult for Babcock to pull off than his detroit days.
