If he no-reported, his contract COULD be terminated (no pay but team gets cap relief and loses their asset) or the team could just stop paying him (no pay, no cap relief but the team retains their rights).
But I can't see him pulling that. Larkin seems like the kind of player who will show up and put the effort in, even if he wants out. 28-29 his NTC turns to a 10 team no trade.

Can't terminate contracts one-sided. Need to have both sides agree and there is no incentive for the Red Wings to do it. Gets them out of the contract, but if he no-shows, he doesn't get paid. I believe he'd be suspended for no-showing too - which would remove his cap hit. The Red Wings need to get something back for him so they're never agreeing to terminate.

Larkin has 6 more years on his deal, so while a holdout is a possibility, if he does it he's throwing away millions of dollars, and he could sit forever. He's undoubtedly banking on the fact that the Red Wings will feel pressure to get the situation over with, and that getting little is better than getting more - similar to how the Rangers did with Panarin in the end. But trading your best player for peanuts is a bad strategy.

Yzerman did cave on Martin St. Louis and traded him where he wanted to go relatively quickly (and for a paltry return) so maybe Larkin is hoping history repeats itself here. We'll see if Yzerman learned anything from that.

"Thinking that a bad team's best players are the reason the team is bad is the "Tambellini re-signing Lennart Petrell" of sports opinions." @Woodguy55
