Sam O’Reilly (TBL) is #MemorialCup MVP. Had a goal and 3 assists in the final (7 pts in 4 GP). Also won OHL MVP & OHL playoff MVP.
Only 3 others have won MVP, playoff MVP, & Mem Cup MVP in one season: Brad Richards, Corey Perry, and Mitch Marner. #GoBolts
Saw some suggestions that it was actually the Lightning that inquired us about O’Rieilly and baited us with Howard. Hope that’s not true, but wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

It did seem like a bit of an overpayment at the time, given that it looked unlikely that Howard was going to sign there and (presumably) wanted to go to Edmonton. Tampa made this deal with their back against the wall a little bit.

Think August 15th this summer is when he would have just became a UFA. Hopefully we enjoyed our 5 points out of him in 29 games this season.
Guess no guarantee we would have got him as UFA, but I'd bet if we didn't do that trade we would be very happy we held onto O'Rielly. And maybe the Oilers, chance to be a winger with McDavid or Drai, appeal would have been the same for Howard this summer after another year in college.
Ah well.

Does O'Reilly hold any more trade value than Howard? In his rookie AHL season, he was over a ppg and scored 24G in 47 games, while looking like he could swim in the NHL as a 21-year-old coming off a Hobey Baker season.
To me it does not matter which one we had, they are in all likelihood moving that asset this summer. Howard has done nothing to diminish his stock, while O'Reilly came into the season with many more question marks as an overage CHL'er. If by chance we hold onto Howard, and O'Reilly stays with the Lightning, who makes a major impact sooner? The older prospect and the one with pro experience, or the 20 year-old who is just wrapping up his last CHL season? I did not mind the trade then, and I am most certainly okay with it today.
