So there's lots to dislike about the GM. The Jarry trade looks absolutely disastrous, and you wonder if they'd just tried Ingram first if maybe that saves them from the mistake.
That said, the coach WAS an issue. There were a bunch of stats that came out during the playoffs about how the team played with a lead - they were statistically horrible even in the years where they made the finals. They were more likely to surrender the lead than basically any team that's won the Cup - and it was getting more pronounced, not better.
I do think we once again had a coach who hates playing youth, and who's happy to trot out a lineup full of old dudes who probably aren't going to contribute much in hopes that Connor and Leon can just win the games for everyone all the time. It's not a great strategy and what it does with young players is puts huge scrutiny on any mistake that they make because they know if they give up anything, that could be it for them for the next several games.
I really don't like that he got nothing out of Mangiapane, forcing us to have to basically pay to give him away. I don't like that Tomasek got to the point where he just gave up partway through the year to go home because he wasn't getting used.
I still think we're likely to end up with Cassidy after all is said and done here. Out of the Oilers, Vegas and Cassidy, there is only one party that benefitted from having it leak that permission was sought and yet to be granted. It puts pressure on the Knights and could become a bit of a sideshow for them while they're in the playoffs and for the Oilers, it outed them that they were shopping for other alternatives (while keeping Knoblauch on the side burner just in case). For Cassidy, the added pressure on Vegas makes it more likely that they relent and let him talk to others...specifically Edmonton.
I think for him, given the Leafs - who may be rebuilding around a new young star, the Kings - who just lost Kopitar and who are saddled with a very sleepy GM, and the Oilers - there is one team that's way closer to a championship and if I'm a coach, that's the challenge I want to take on.
He saw that team smack the crap out of his team in the playoffs last year even with a mediocre coach and terrible goaltending. If he can turn some of that around? Magic.
It'll take a while because Vegas is set on being jerks here, but I bet we start the season with Cassidy behind the bench.
