Oilers amateur and pro scouting is a joke and has been for a long time.

They've been out-scouted on their OWN players.. McLeod.. Broberg .. Holloway all top line performers on their respective teams .. Broberg especially

Oiler scouts always think they are the smartest in the room.. except they are usually in the wrong room..

I am not defending the scouting on this team but I think you have some strong bias going on here. None of these three were legit 1st line players on their own teams, I strongly doubt they would have been if the oilers kept them. In fact, all three would have been consistent targets for some on this VERY board based on how they play.
McLeod was 6th in TOI among forward, 3 for C's. By most metrics he was the 3rd or 4th best C on the Sabres. Has lots of tools, like your beloved speed, but the play dies on his stick. Flies around but rarely amounts to much. He loses focus defensively and is often out of position.
Holloway was 6th in TOI, 3rd for LW's. He faired better than McLeod but was still performing like a second line player. Still injury prone it seems. When I watch him he seems lazy AF. I just dont think he has the effort to make much of his talent.
Broberg, like all defenseman, is harder to quantify. He did lead the team in TOI and points for defenceman. He also had a LOT of giveaways and very few takeaways. If you watched the Blues play it was noticeable how poor he was unless the puck was on his stick. Anyone who dislikes Bouchard, would have HATED Broberg this year. I will say he is still young and I think he will still improve.

Of the three, Broberg is the only one I think has a chance to be a legit first line player in the league. McLeod has peaked, he is what he is. If Holloway can stay healthy he might be a 1st line player but I would bet on him being a marginal 2nd line winger

Wasn't referring to them being 1st line players on the Oilers but on their current teams which they all are

Broberg was, but the forwards absolutely were not top line players, either in production or minutes played.

Thats what I mean they weren't valued that high on the Oilers.. even Broberg.. but other team scouting/analytics saw the talent and made the aquisition.. and they are leading minutes on those teams now.. and we sign fred for 8 years with a NMC

Not knowing what you have in players you drafted and developed is very very bad. Especially if they break out the year right after you let them go. And they perform at a level way beyond what you would have had to pay to keep them. Embarrassing by Holland, JJ and to a lesser extend Bowman. Holland and JJ were both there and working with our development team to understand what they had with these players. Holland let the relationship sour with both. JJ finished the job by blowing all his cash early in the summer and treating both players like an afterthought. Bowman came in and probably trusted the org that these guys could be let go without issue.

I took part in the fan spite that made me OK to see these guys gone and excluded from the awesomeness of being on our contender team. JJ probably viewed it similarly. He joined in the fan spite against McLeod as well when there was probably a bunch of other ways to get Savoie out of Buffalo. That's being a fan though. Guys are paid many millions among them to properly evaluate our players. Endless failure is all Katz gets for that money.
