Quote:

Claims by November he was done with Edmonton:

I knew it wasn’t working by November. Not the team … the situation. The promise I’d failed to keep.

I told my agent: “I’m done after this year. Start figuring out how to make it happen.”

From November to June, I played every game knowing I was leaving.

If this is true, I have to say he kept it very well hidden for the longest time. From my recollection, there was never any inkling of discontent for the entire season, and the trade request that was dropped after the SCF, was a complete and utter surprise to everyone including the media.

Maybe I'm misremembering...

Spectorshockey.net has been my go to for hockey rumours since about 2005. I remember reading the day before his request went public that there was a rumour he wanted out, and even Lyle (the owner of the site) thought it was unlikely since the Oilers had just lost the Stanley Cup a few days before. Then the next day it went public and we were all shocked. If there had been some indication during the season, I think there would have been mention of it somewhere.

Maybe Touchstone knew about it.

Someone posted here around January of 2006 that Pronger didn't like Edmonton. There was an odor of rumors over the winter, but this board and larger oilogosphere collectively ignored it. Once the trade deadline happened and the team started to roll we were caught up in the absolute euphoria of that 3 month run. Such good times. The rug pull afterwards is still an all-timer.

I don't buy Pronger signed an 'eff it' 5 year contract while drunk coming out of the lockout. I do think he made a bad decision and came to regret being in Edmonton almost immediately. The team wasn't very good for most of that year and probably should have missed the playoffs.

I also think Lowe was a bad GM who made a lot of emotional decisions who is now covering for his own ineptitude.
