6 Cups

To be fair to Nurse - he played the puck and deflected the shot wide. Yes, could have managed that gap better potentially but it's Nathan MacKinnon. He gets space between him and players pretty regularly and he's moving with high pace there.

I don't think that you can qualify what Nurse did as a push in any way. If anything, MacKinnon drives through his head on that play. When McDavid got suspended for the hit on the Islander defenceman, it was similar - other than it was at the blueline rather than the crease. Player in a vulnerable position and McDavid took the path that led through his head. I think that one was extreme, and that it would have been hard to give him a major for smashing Nurse, but really, he goes shoulder through Nurse's head, and hip through Ingram's head. That's a wrecking ball sequence.

And Kadri moaning that he jumps, but he doesn't at all. His feet are flat on the ground until he hits Ingram. He doesn't try to twist out of the way either. I think he probably thought he could get a way with some contact on the goalie, having just played the puck. Likely didn't mean to hit him that hard, but still...

As a player, I was always a round-the-net guy, and I loved getting a little piece of the goalie whenever I could, knowing it was likely to drive him a little mad. I think this is probably some of that - with a bigger collision than anticipated.

Yeah I think it's right to blame MacKinnon primarily because he is the guy skating directly at the crease. Even if he intended to cut into the ice with his left foot and try to make a hard turn to get out of the way, he might still not have made it and also needed to jump if he wanted to avoid some contact with Ingram. I don't doubt that MacKinnon wanted that pass, it was an inch from landing on his stick before Nurse got it with his fully extended stick. MacKinnon is pretty focused on trying to get a crazy angle shot off from that pass, I don't think he even thought Nurse would able to lunge into that gap.

Nurse definitely get wasted by MacKinnon, but that is probably just putting yourself in a bad position, leaning over as far as possible with an arm fully extended. I think in isolation that would be written off as coincidental contact and Nurse would have to take his share of the blame for getting nailed because of the gamble he took with that reach to get the puck away from MacKinnon. But, since it's coincidental, Nurse shouldn't take much if any blame for what happens to MacKinnon's body as a result. So MacKinnon takes the blame for what happens after the contact, which is a near decapitation of a goalie.

Obviously I'm not shy about critiquing Nurse's play. He's always putting himself into spots where he has to make desperation lunges and slides that can take him completely out of the play to make up for poor positioning. But for sure, MacKinnon is the main creator of this mess. Just wish we had a dman that would, instead of puck watching on plays like this, would just cover their man and angle MacKinnon away from the net much earlier. Walman looks equally out to lunch defending this 3 on 3 rush.

Nurse is lucky he has the power lunge and arm/stick length too because he was an inch away from not getting a stick on that pass before MacKinnon could try to put it in. The worst outcome would have been Nurse's reach was just an inch shorter, he misses the puck and MacKinnon scores before completely destroying Ingram. Then you have the goal count and not even sure the refs would have called a penalty anymore. The kinds of knifes edge situations you create with pure reaction/desperation defending.
