Tough counter-factual. At the point he signed the offer sheet, I think it would have been difficult to keep Broberg no matter what. He felt mistreated under the Holland-era Oilers, and he wanted a new start. He'd asked to be traded multiple times by that point.
And to be fair to him, he made a great decision for his career which has already paid off huge. If he had stayed here, it's unlikely he gets as significant a role as he has had in St. Louis based on who we've had at LD. He likely spends at least one more season behind Nurse and Ekholm and he's not getting paid that kind of money he just got if he's a third pairing guy.
Klingberg was an adventure and flagged when we got in to the Finals last year. He's playing middle pairing minutes in San Jose now, and he's been okay. 20 points which would be 3rd on the Oilers but also -9. Our system has seemed quite flawed - I'm not sure someone that leaky historically would make it better this year.
I mean, we can wish for something we don't have I guess, but I'm not sure the point. We can't undo multiple trades & signings to have a different defensive group.
I do think the system is broken here. Either the execution isn't happening for some reason, or other teams have diagnosed it and understand how to beat it, but we are giving up too many golden chances consistently and it's happening against all our pairings. The coaches need to go back to the drawing board and either adjust the system, or fix the execution when we come back at the end of the month.
