Drury is really bad at this. Announcing publicly that they didn't want to re-sign Panarin and then benching him entirely put them completely over a barrel. They forced themselves in to a corner and then they had no leverage to make him go anywhere else.
Apparently all our criticism of Holland made him realize that he shouldn't just pay whatever was asked for a player who only has your name on his no-move exception list.
Worst case scenario really, seeing him join a divisional rival for cheap and at not a bad contract either.

Holland is back in his comfort zone I guess. Panarin wanted so badly to play in the next biggest US city that he would sign on a shorter term and for less money than anywhere else. Saw claims from Friedman that Seattle offered him 4 x 14M and that wasn't enough for him to give up going to LA.
I'm not rich enough to understand millionaire life in a huge city, but I guess Panarin can't give whatever it's about up, and that gave Holland the kind of easy mode he was used to in Detroit with a team full of HHoF players and no cap.

I'm curious what the Oilers did here, if anything.
Given he was greenlighted to talk to anyone, if I'm GM I'm selling hard probably on just come here, no contract, finish the year, win a Cup, make a gazillion in the summer.
Given what the Kings paid for him (AT 50% RETAINED TOO!) we could definitely have found a deal that worked for the Rangers if we could have got his attention.
He's apparently even friends with Podkolzin.
