It's hilarious when I see fans (particularly fans of other teams) bashing on Bouchard and talking about how bad he is. The guy is an elite player. He is not Makar or Hughes, but he is a top 10 defender in the NHL. $10.5M is a lot, but there is no way that anyone can say he is a massive overpay. They say his numbers are good because he plays on the powerplay with McDavid, forgetting that Makar gets to play on the powerplay with MacKinnon. The Oilers power play is the greatest of all time and Bouchard is a huge part of that. He has the best shot of any defenceman in the NHL.
The mistakes he makes in his own zone are outweighed in 9/10 games he plays by what he adds. One thing that I see him being excellent at it the ability to keep the puck in the zone. If not for him being able to keep the puck in the zone last Spring the Oilers would have lost to LA. The guy is great, but because he is on the Oilers he gets bashed extra hard. The Oilers are a hard team to play for not just because of their own fans, but because since the 1980s I think there is a culture of fans just feeling that the Oilers don't deserve anything because they had Gretzky and won 5 Cups. During the Decade if Darkness people loved piling on the Oilers. I never feel bad for other fans when their team is doing poorly because of that (except maybe for Sabres fans).
