Carolina takes him.

I'm not sure what the Oilers are doing with their bottom six. They have all these zombie veteran forwards who get nothing done, and then they allow Tomasek to go back to Europe and now they lose Philp on waivers.

It's worth noting we have MAX JONES on the roster still. Curtis Lazar continues to centre our fourth line. Henrique has given us a steady diet of nothing all year. Janmark has scored on a goalie only twice I think in the last two seasons.

I understand that the coach doesn't like to take a lot of risks in the bottom half of the roster, but this is taking things to an extreme level. It's just foolish to expect your top two lines to win you every game. We have such high skill up there that they've got us close to a Cup two years in a row, but ultimately, you need contributions from all four lines. The Oilers haven't seemed to understand that for 15 years.

Got lots of players on this roster that perform basically equivalent to Philip. Only, Philip costed 750k, while lots of the other useless guys make 1-4M.

Definitely not impressed with how Bowman is handling the bottom 6 group. Zero playmaking ability down there. All you can hope from any of them to make some positive impact on a game is some decent PKing. PKing forwards honestly are a dime a dozen though, the forward activity is more about coaching that anything else.

You can't let the coach off the hook here though either. When he's had more talented guys in the bottom six, he's expecting them to take no risks - dump and chase, put pucks to the net and look for rebounds. There's no blessing for people to demonstrate any skill at all. And no rewards for actual contribution too - Philp scored, immediately scratched. Hutson scored, demoted. Knoblauch's expectations of the bottom six do not include putting up numbers - which is why they never do.

They have to shift that mindset. It's not a very good one.

I am fine with the idea that a depth line should be aware who they're on the ice against. If they find themselves up against MacKinnon and Makar, then play it safe, get it deep, get off the ice. But if you're up against the other team's third or fourth lines, then why not actually try to outplay them???

Also - your point on cap dollars is a really good one. If you even can bury someone in the minors with a higher cap, you're saving money with Philp in the lineup as the buried amount is somewhere in the range of $1.1-1.2MM.

It's sad that every coach we have seems to be viewed the same way. That they can't get a thing out of our bottom 6 players. At the same time, every GM we have seems to absolutely suck at getting some actual talent in the bottom 6. How much can you get players with minimal skills and vision to create? As you have said time and time again though, these coaches also seem scared to ice young players with skill. Hutson is back in the AHL putting up points every night, why isn't he on this roster right now? Philip was drowned with defensive zone starts and still produced more/60 and with the adjustment on his zone starts, he probably performed better than most of our bottom 6 in other metrics as well.

We seem to have this bad mix of GM's loading our bottom 6 with useless "veteran" players, and guys with fat contracts that demand ice time to try to justify. And then these young guys that the GM will sparingly offer up that get lousy opportunities anyways with their ice time. If we had just 1 semi-talented center on the 3rd line, maybe things could be different and there would be wingers in the bottom 6 all getting these chances to shine now and then offensively. But right now, no matter the situation or score, there is almost no talent or playmaking on display at center in the bottom 6.

Pray we don't face a team like Florida again in the playoffs, because we'll never beat them with a 1 or 2 line team.
