When he's had more talented guys in the bottom six, he's expecting them to take no risks - dump and chase, put pucks to the net and look for rebounds. There's no blessing for people to demonstrate any skill at all. And no rewards for actual contribution too - Philp scored, immediately scratched. Hutson scored, demoted. Knoblauch's expectations of the bottom six do not include putting up numbers - which is why they never do.
They have to shift that mindset. It's not a very good one.
I am fine with the idea that a depth line should be aware who they're on the ice against. If they find themselves up against MacKinnon and Makar, then play it safe, get it deep, get off the ice. But if you're up against the other team's third or fourth lines, then why not actually try to outplay them???
Also - your point on cap dollars is a really good one. If you even can bury someone in the minors with a higher cap, you're saving money with Philp in the lineup as the buried amount is somewhere in the range of $1.1-1.2MM.

Just asking, or expecting, the bottom 6 to score by the coach isn't the problem.. they're getting caved 5v5 .. everyone on the ice without either LD or McD on it with them .. is getting out-scored 41 to 17 by the opposition (-24).. and with either McD or LD on the ice.. Oilers out-score the opposition 61 for 48 against (+13)
Its not that these forwards can't score.. they can't stop getting scored on either. Philp had one of the best pts/60 out of any of those plugs.. with exclusively 4th line minutes..unlike Mangiapane and some of the rest.. Philp also knows how to play center .. data from Lowetide
This is why Hurricanes analytics guys picked him up.. plus he's league minimum cap.. Carolina makes a lot of smart moves with player pick ups.. excluding Kokoniemi..
Point to ponder.. Mangi/Fred/Henrique = $10.45M 😪
Frederik. blackhole of offensive talent

Mattias Janmark 1.24
Ike Howard 1.18
Andrew Mangiapane 1.13
David Tomasek .92
Curtis Lazar .75
Adam Henrique .69
Trent Frederic .44
