Losing to a goalie who's at .778 SV% for the game. Sounds about right.
We can barely win when our goalie posts a 0.8 SV% so not unexpected that we're behind.
To be clear, I'm not blaming that 100% on our goalies. We've left our goalies out to dry SO MANY times this year, but at some point you'll hope they make a save.

I agree and I think this is a case of two things can be true.
Skinner (and even more so Pickard) have not been good enough.
The team is giving up too many dangerous chances. Whether it is a missed assignment, giveaway, lost battle or some other mistake this is happening too many times a game.
The upside for me is that the second point can likely be cleaned up. The Oilers are only averaging around 26 SA/G, one of the better teams in the league. Stop the neutral zone giveaways and focus on positioning in the D zone and I would bet the goalies start to look a lot better.

Agreed.
The more concerning stat for me is that for the past 2-3 years we've been top of the league in expected goals for, so even when the results didn't go in our favour we at least had that going for us.
This year we've been near the BOTTOM of the league in expected goals for. That tells me that we're not even generating the chances needed.
That needs fixing asap. Less Smytty shots from the point, more actual threatening shots please

To your point about expected goals.
I mentioned the SA stat. I see some pretty drastic changes in some of the systems and defensive commitments from the forwards. There are less blowing the zone or trying longer stretch passes from their own end. Once in the offensive one the are playing more conservatively, often having F3 in the high slot instead of right down low.
Those things will limit the SA but also the expected goals for.
These big changes to the forwards would have a big impact on defenceman. They need to get used to a lot of timing angles and where the support is coming from. This may be one of the causes to this disorganized look from the entire group of blueliners.
The optimist in me hopes they are fully committed to learning how to play a defensive style, knowing the have the offensive, run and gun style mastered. This would allow them to be a more well rounded team later in the season and playoffs.

Haven't watched a game this year, so I'm hoping that maybe that's it. I agree that come playoff time that could pay dividends, but I'm worried that we're so disjointed that we may not even get that far.
