The thing is, in the 20 years there has been a salary cap, the top cap hit in any given year has never won the Cup. (20 already? WOW!!!)
Lidstrom in 2008 (7th highest cap hit), Crosby in 2009 (2nd highest cap hit), Malkin in 2016 and 2017 (4th and 5th highest cap hit), and Ovechkin in 2018 (4th highest cap hit) are the only ones ever in the top 10.
I think Crosby/Malkin is similar to McDavid/Draisaitl. Both pairs will go down as some all time great duos - very close to the top.
But other than that, you need guys to leave a bit on the table if you want to be a perennial contender. I get they have egos and want that big number, but what can you do with $120m that you can't with $100M?
People say "well would you give up 20% of your salary?" - well no, but I also can't buy a house, a few cars, another house, pay all my kids education, take a few luxury trips and have a few million left over on just 1 year salary. With another lottery win coming next year...

Sucks. We were close to the Crosby one I guess? MacKinnon kicked McDavid down a peg for 23/24 making McDAavid #2, then Matthews made him #3. It was there for the taking, but just needed slightly less crappy management in the years leading up.
Now extreme hard mode is back, assuming McDavid extends.
