I got to attend an engagement with Alberta's chief justice Rita Khullar who gave an excellent speech about the public's lack of trust in government institutions. She spent a good 20 minutes explaining that Canadians just don't trust justice anymore. The problem was (and is) her solution is to double down on the very thing that makes people not trust the justice system: justice with empathy.
This case is a really great example of our failed institutions.

Alternatively the purpose of any system or institution is what it does. And the justice system is working exactly as intended.
I'm not suggesting for a second that this is a good thing for our society or what it once was. Just that it isn't an accident or a coincidence.

I accept this without reservation. I do think our current justice system is working exactly as intended. Viewed from this lens, my lens, the Hart verdict doesn't matter. Whether we think not guilt, guilty, the system has been intentionally broken, or the system will get it right. We already believe what we believe.
Please do not feed the bears. Feeding the bears creates a dependent population unable to survive on their own. Bears.
