Here's a good preliminary break down .. LTIR gymnastics teams will be looking for work..

I'm really interested to see how the new playoff cap mechanisms will work. Closing the LTIR will stop a certain amount of rage from fans about opposing teams loading up, but it may have the unintended consequence of killing off a lot of activity at the trade deadline. If most of the contending teams are close to the cap, then they won't be able to make those moves.

I understand that there will be a mechanism that teams must have in-game lineups that are compliant to the salary cap, but how are players acquired during the year counted? Historically, you've seen teams able to multiply their cap to an extent at the deadline because $1MM in cap space held over the course of the season can get you a ~$4MM player at the deadline. LTIR has been used to super-size that and to give teams currently at the cap the ability to get significantly more, but is the new rule going to close off both of these things? Or is the $4MM player going to only count against the team's cap at $1MM because he only played a quarter of the season with the acquiring team?

If it's both sides of that being closed off, then we're going to see in-season trades really fall off as teams will have to shed significant contracts in order to make any significant deals.

Probably a good thing if parity is the goal. I'm not sure if losing activity at the trade deadline is that big of a loss for the league. People just watch most of that stuff on twitter these days. Not like there is some big revenue boost to the league or networks because of more deadline activity.

The incentive for players on contenders to have random injuries right around the deadline is so extreme now. It literally wins teams Stanley cups. The way the rules are now, you are basically stupid to not find a way to work out the scam with a big money player on your team and get those extra players at the deadline. Hope they just go by the players full season cap to create the ceiling for playoff rosters.
