Frederic's cap hit is only going up ~1.5 million. It's not as absurd as we think. Shipping Kane out for nothing does free up some space the Oilers will desperately need soon.

At least with Kane roaming the wings no one was coming near Leon or McDavid.. no Mikey Anderson slew foots.. now who do they have.. Nurse? .. nobody is intimidated by D. Nurse... Kane was on the team for the Mikey Anderson slewfoots.
And all the other abuse those guys took the last couple of years. Remember - Draisaitl's been dinged up pretty badly in a couple of the runs. Kane's retribution on people is often ineffective. He'll take the penalties, but what does he accomplish? Look at his game ejections in the final. The first he gives a prone Panthers' player a little slap on the face with his stick. It got considered for a major because of its obviousness, but he didn't hurt the player at all. Got a penalty, got thrown out, but did NOTHING.
His second ejection was similar. He slashes at Tkachuk, but its the lightest of swings and aimed at a very padded location. He postures a lot, but he rarely takes a pound of flesh, even when he's getting penalized. Total paper tiger.
He's been a phantom both years in the Finals and even in the semis. Last year he had just one point in the last two rounds, before he sat for the last few games with his injuries. This year he had one 3 assist performance against Dallas, but otherwise only two points in those two rounds.
And the worst thing is the selfishness. They were talking about it on Spittin' Chiclets during the Finals that he was mopey about getting moved down the lineup. Marchand was playing 3rd line for Florida and starring while Kane was just grouchy about his lot in life, rather than doing anything to prove he should be higher up. That's just not a player we're going to miss.
