Frederic's cap hit is only going up ~1.5 million. It's not as absurd as we think. Shipping Kane out for nothing does free up some space the Oilers will desperately need soon.

I don't have a rationalization for that part of it. Do the Oilers think he's a 5 million dollar player?

I guess that's maybe it. They figure they were paying $5.125MM for Kane each year, so if he's the Kane replacement and only $3.85MM it's a bargain. I think that's a weak rationalization and that it's bonkers to give any depth player that much term, but it is what it is.
The 27-year old UFAs do always tend to do pretty well - GMs just see them as having a huge amount of career in front of them still. I hope he's got at least 6 or 7 good years left!
The only other thing I can think of there is that if the team believed he would get $5MM in the open market, then giving term helps there and really the near-term years are more important than the later years when they feel A) the window may have closed, B) the cap may have gone up, C) they can deal with that problem at that point and D) it's probably a different GM's problem anyhow.
