We thought we were set for top 6 wingers when we blew all our cap space on Arvidsson and Skinner. How stupid does this make our pro scouting look, and our understanding of players aligning with our coaches?
Our pro scouts need to do some HEAVY lifting this summer if we are going to fix this roster. Sadly, at least with forwards and goaltending, really bad recent history.

The coach and GM have to be at least aligned on strategy around the depth chart. We got Jeff Skinner at a reasonable cost following his buyout and the coach refused to play him on the top lines all season. I want to be fair to Knoblauch so I'll acknowledge that his first couple months, Skinner had just a miserable plus/minus. He went -8 in 13 games in November (although already playing down lineup).
But then the coach developed a massive blindspot. Skinner finished the year at +1, while other guys who got the push ahead of him were much worse. Kapanen was a team worst -16 on the season. Janmark was -6, Arvidsson was -3.
Skinner had 29 points playing off the third and fourth line all season. That's more than Holloway had in his entire time with the Oilers and more than all forwards outside of McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, Hyman and Perry. It's just a huge miss. Even with Hyman out and Nuge playing with a broken hand, the coach wouldn't put Skinner with McDavid or Draisaitl in the Finals. It's bonkers.
