I know we are in the middle of an awesome playoff run, but it would feel wrong to not mention that Sam Gagner retired today. He was subsequently hired as the Director of the Player Development by the Senators.

Sam Gagner was one of my favourite Oilers for a long time. I was living in Columbus when he was drafted and was able to attend the draft that year. Coming off a disappointing season that saw Ryan Smyth get traded and the team implode on itself afterwards I was excited to see the Oilers at least get a top 10 pick (rare in those days for them). His started off his career with a bang getting 7 points in his first 8 games, convincing the Oilers not to send him back to juniors. He finished that year with 49 points, which would unfortunately be his best as an Oiler, and 2nd best of his career. I recall him being pretty great in the shootout that year, where the Oilers set a still standing NHL record with 15 shootout wins. Obviously his 8 point game against Chicago is the biggest highlight of his time here and of his career.
Overall he never lived up to the expectations that we had when drafting him at #7. Good luck to him in retirement.
