Less worried about the RFA year being burned and more just hoping that he will be good enough that we actually care about that later.

Excellent point, never crossed my mind that it was a negotiation tool.

Pretty much guaranteed. You have the option to bring him forward or to watch him sign with someone else who's going to burn that year.
As it happens, the Oilers are short bodies anyhow, so getting him a game or two isn't a hardship.

Oilers were early pioneers in giving college ufa’s whatever they wanted. I remember our coach having to inform Ryan Whitney before our season started that he would have to expect a drop in his PP and prime offensive ice time (because we promised a new lad that that never touched NHL ice that time). The Jultz hit his max bonuses that year playing 4th forward hehe. That was our cup win that season.

I don't think teams should guarantee playing time - that has to be earned and how often is the coach in that meeting anyhow?
That said, on maxing out bonuses and such, it's a competitive situation with multiple bidders and only so many levers you can pull. The player has a lot of power in that negotiation. For the team, the only place where you can really differentiate, assuming everyone else is going to be close to the same on bonuses, burning a year, base salary, is by selling them on opportunity. Need to make sure they feel like they'll have the best chance to make the NHL team here, and that they'll have chances to win championships and play with superstars.
Might even help if one of the superstars was to give them a call and sell the place a little...

Yeah, bonuses and RFA situation for sure are easy to give to stay competitive. If the player lives up to the hype and earns their bonus and another nice contract after the ELC, so be it. If not, you can let them walk.
Guaranteeing 1st PP time, no chance demotion and all that kinda stuff is only something an embarrassing and desperate org would do, which we were for many years :)
