| Jay wrote on Fri, 21 March 2025 10:10 | I wonder how many first round picks the Oilers would be willing to give up right now to be able to have Philip Broberg signed for two years at 4.5?
Exactly like I said at the time, they elected to let emotions cloud their judgement and whine about his salary so they could wait six months to sign a guy with no hips and give up a first round pick for a worse player at the deadline. Classic. Not to even mention Holloway at 2.2M. Good thing they had that cap flexibility.
Reminds me a bit of another Oilers all timer when this garbage organisation decided that it was a good idea to stick it to Mike Comrie and have Jeff Woywitka rather than making the most obvious trade in the world and having 17 year old Corey Perry.

Not locking up Holloway has to be up there. What a breath of fresh air he was in the playoffs.
At $4.5 for Broberg, a guy who apparantly really didn't want to be here - fine. But even then, if you know he doesn't want to be here, he just had a pretty damned good showing in the playoffs. Move him for something at the draft.
But Holloway? They should have gotten than done ASAP, Cheap young home grown talent is how you stay competitive. Hell, even at $2.2M it was obviously a mistake to let him walk. For a 3rd round pick...
People like to say he would not have gotten as much opportunity here and other such stuff so he wouldn't have done as well. Well he has 23 goals and 56 points. In only 16:48 TOI per game. You know who has more points on the Oilers? Draisaitl and McDavid. That's it. Next closest forward is RNH with 11 less. And just looking at EV, he has 43. 13 better than Hyman's 30. Sadly I think this one will look worse and worse over time.

Classic shiny new toy blindness took hold.
It really does suck that time and time again it seems like the org that drafted and developed our players from scratch seem to end up knowing the least about what their potential is. Holloway is ~half the cost of Arvidsson and 33% cheaper than Skinner, and he really wanted to stay here. Guy looked crushed when we didn't match. We didn't give him the time of day in the offseason because we thought JJ's spending spree had us all set on the wing.
Org is paying millions worth of salaries to a group of people that are forever clueless about what we have in our org. For many of them, that's their only job, understanding and helping develop our home grown talent. Still need a real house cleaning.
