This is precisely correct. A draft pick gives you a potential future player. If you can get an equivalent or better player and get them NOW instead of waiting years for them to arrive, then you've done well for yourself.

Yes - the guy drafted in June 2026 is going to be under team control for several years, while there's a chance the guy you're trading for could leave. However, A) a guy picked in the last handful of picks in the first round is a question mark to even play in the NHL at all, and B) the team needs to win now. What's the consolation in getting a guy who might be a third liner for us in 2030 if we never win a Cup with McDavid & Draisaitl? The team needs to load up. Address the weaknesses. Get back to the Finals and this time win it.
