Sounds to me like it's Kane that is wanting to return prior to the playoffs, but the team wants him to stay on LTIR until the playoffs so they can use that LTIR space. Hence why they are gauging trade interest on him.

Maybe we just happen to be the only contender with a huge arse pain player like this that can't see how he can help the team add more players at the deadline and give himself and the team a better chance at the cup.
Two years in a row maybe? If this is true, then I do wonder if Kane refused to sit out and properly heal with the added benefit of LTIR last year too. That basically would have costed us the cup because we could have had another ~5M of players plus a healthier Kane for the playoff run.
