So - they go with Pickard next game? 3 wins in a row. .938% and 1.67GAA over those games.
|
Yeah but Skinner played a good playoff game once against Dallas!

I don't understand the commitment to the guy. I was a very early Skinner booster, and I still think he makes a great backup., but I just don't have much confidence in him as a #1.
Even after being on the team that went to game 7 of the finals, no goalie with as many GP this century has a worse save %. He is dead last at .894 (2nd worst is Emery with .902). GAA is 5th worst. I know those are just cherry picked stats, but they mirror what I see. Someone who will have a great game now and then, but more often than not needs his team to outscore his play.
|
I'm known to have a short memory in regard to goalies, but I have to admit that I couldn't agree more.

Of all the obvious unforced errors the Oilers have made in the McDavd era, goaltending is the worst. Just rolling with Smith / Koskinen for 3 years then betting the farm on Campbell / Skinner for 1 before going Skinner / Pickard for 2 is a parade of trying to only be good enough. Box checking at its finest.

It is really an incredible blindspot. I mean, you could say that you thought that the team owed it to Skinner to give him another year as the starter given that he backstopped us to game 7 of the Cup Finals, but I mean, he got benched in the 2nd round after bombing several games. You'd think that at least you'd have looked to see if there was a better back-up than Picard.
Picard's played some of his best hockey of his entire career as an Oiler - but when you're a 33-year old journeyman, that's not usually the time when people come in to their own. It's not clear that it's sustainable and so it wouldn't have been the the horse I bet on as the right back-up. Reality is that he's one injury away from being our starter and his track record doesn't suggest that he would excel in the role. We've made it Skinner or bust here, which seems a really dangerous bet.
Maybe the team thinks they can add a 1A goalie at the deadline as well as a RHD?
