The funny (maybe just to me) thing is I wasn't think of Draisaitl's German or Euroness at all. My only thought was of him as the second banana to McDavid.

I agree with that as well. When McDavid is out, the pressure on Draisaitl looms large, especially as he's currently the holder of the biggest contract in hockey, even if that hasn't kicked in yet.
Did not think you were going the Mark Spector path, but agreeing with the other poster that it is a real thing, and that he's judged slightly differently because of it. I mean, just look at people even in here commenting on him giving grouchy answers or seeming intense or mean at times. When it's Toews or MacKinnon, everyone thinks they're being great leaders. When they're German, they just say they're "pissy".
Also, large guy with a long stride as narrative number 3. Those guys are always tarred as "lazy" or "don't care" because it looks too natural. Mediocre media guys (and lots of fans, although they're not paid to know better) always love the choppy skating styles that look like the guy is REALLY making an effort to get around the ice, even if they're not close to as fast.

Gotta say I couldn't be happier with how Draisaitl imposed himself on the game last night. From what I saw, watching between trick or treaters, he was everything you'd want a Messier to be.

As Spec would say he's got more Camrose than Cologne to his game!
*Note - this comment was a joke, and doesn't represent the poster's position relative to the birthplace driving the kind of player someone becomes.
