Some guys need to be a little mean from time to time to be at their best. That's going to sometimes lead to penalties, and sometimes it's going to draw penalties in revenge. I'll take the good with the bad there.

Not to mention the amount of abuse that he (and other elite players) take is astronomical. The fact that NHL refs think they need to keep things even by calling the inevitable retaliation or chintzy infraction from someone like Draisaitl while ignoring the non stop muggings is on the NHL and their god awful officiating - not the stars for occasionally sticking up for themselves.
The fact is the penalties are going to be roughly even anyway. So Draisaitl, Mcdavid etc should absolutely push back now and then to create a bit of room.

Messier, Anderson, Linseman, Guerin, Pronger...we've had a bunch of players over the years who were mean and would take penalties from time to time but it was an important element to their game.
I actually always wished Hall was a little meaner when he was here. He would cleanly take hits and I thought if he was just a little more liberal with elbows and stick, that maybe he wouldn't have been hurt so often.
Anyhow, I'm totally fine with Draisaitl making sure people know he's willing to dish it out. It probably gets him a little extra room and respect, and it's nice to have a few guys who are miserable to play with. Even better when they'll also light you up on the scoreboard too.

Mean is throwing a crosscheck, not an extra stick tap well away from the play or a little spear.
He’s taken some brutal and obvious penalties in big games in the playoffs. He’s a veteran of the game now and about to be the highest paid player in the NHL. It is reasonable to expect he would grow out of it one day and know when to pick his moments. Love him but everybody has something they can improve.

I agree. I didn’t see his penalty tonight, but it feels like he’s more known to react than known to dish it out. That just seems to invite it.
Make it count if you are gonna put your team on the PK.
