If he was firing on all cylinders and meeting all expectations he wouldn't be on the trade market. Competitive teams aren't giving away good players without a reason.
That said, maybe timing will be better during his stint on the Oilers and he finds his next level.
It's all a roll of the dice.

The way to look at this is to compare to what we’ve given up. A fourth round pick is a toss up to play NHL games at all, and it might be 2028 before we see a single one even if that pick was to become a player. This is low risk for a player on a very manageable salary who has NHL experience. Not a bad gamble.
