I had read on hfboards that he had a bad concussion after his rookie year and took a step hack on development. Oilers having to take a lot of risks on injury prone guys this off season, hopefully it won't bite too hard next year.

If he was firing on all cylinders and meeting all expectations he wouldn't be on the trade market. Competitive teams aren't giving away good players without a reason.
That said, maybe timing will be better during his stint on the Oilers and he finds his next level.
It's all a roll of the dice.

The way to look at this is to compare to what we’ve given up. A fourth round pick is a toss up to play NHL games at all, and it might be 2028 before we see a single one even if that pick was to become a player. This is low risk for a player on a very manageable salary who has NHL experience. Not a bad gamble.
