What an absolutely embarrassing line of justification for an obviously unbalanced treatment of team infractions. That's even worse than the whole "if I call that hook on Connor, I'll have to call all 20 hooks on McDavid each game" reason for so rarely calling infractions committed against McDavid.

With McD, I think part of its how you put it. I think there might be a couple of players in the league who can maybe match McD's speed if it's just a straight up foot race. I think back to the all star game. But McD is by far the fastest player in the NHL who can completely control the puck while skating at full speed, most players have to slow down to control the puck and do what McD can do. So I do think at times, the refs physically aren't in position to make a call because McD blows by them. I do also think what you said is true that in order to be able to have a chance to keep up with McD and try to defend him, the opposition has to cheat. So hook, hold, trip, etc. So a ref could probably call a legit penalty on every shift. So they can't/won't do it.
But I do think the refs are pathetic and weak because I can't for the life of me explain how they can see an Oiler players dragged to the ice and not call anything, then give the Oilers a ticky tack trip 15 seconds later. I think of game 1 when Foegele was tackled in the offensive zone in OT and nothing gets called. That is stopping an offensive chance. Then maybe 15 seconds later, they give Desharnais a pretty weak tripping call. OR, you will see an Oilers get a slashing call. Both sides slash all the time but then Lizzote gives Deharnaris a straight up closed fist punch with his glove on to the face and nothing. So something has to be up. There is just too many extremes to not have something up and I think it's the Oilers PP.
Realistically, if the refs gave the Oilers 4 PP's last game to match the Kings, I bet the Oilers score on half of them. There's the game.
