Here is a guy who is a talented first round pick, probably saw himself being a certain player after he was drafted, it didn't happen right away. But he has come in, accepted a certain role, goes out there and does whatever he can to have success to help the team win, doesn't get down on himself because he's probably not in the role he thought he would be in once he got drafted. He's playing with confidence playing whatever the role the team asks him to play. He's endeared himself to the team, loving life, loving being in the NHL.

Great to see.

And it took a second opportunity and a fresh start. Here’s hoping big Jesse and Benson get the same opportunity elsewhere, and whoever is coming back to us in those trades.

Sadly for a lot of guys that don't find their footing immediately, it takes a second opinion for them to make a change. Cogliano is a perfect example. When he was drafted by the Oilers, he was a scorer in lower levels. So in his mind, he was supposed to be a scorer. The Oilers told him he would make a great 3rd liner, he wanted no part of that. Went to the Ducks, they turned him into a 3rd liner which he finally accepted that role and he's had one hell of a career. He's played over 1100 games, has a ring, made over 32 mill in career earnings. He did an interview with Gregor have he won the cup and he said, he wouldn't be in the league if he hadn't of made that change but it took moving to get him to do it.

I think JP would make one hell of a 3rd liner and have a very long NHL career making a lot of money doing that but he has to accept that role. Sadly, I do not think he will accept that role fully as an Oiler. It's going to take a move for him to do it. I think at the end of last season if he had of embraced being a 3rd liner and signed a contract paying him as a 3rd liner and came into camp seeing being a 3rd liner as a good thing, he'd be having a good season. But he saw himself as a top 6 or bust, he and his agent wanted to be a top 6 or bust, they 3rd liners contact and when the pucks didn't go in early, he got down on himself and as they continue to not go in, he gets further down on himself because he's not doing what he wants and because he's not playing well enough to stay in the top 6, he gets dropped down in the line up which drops his confidence down even further and where we are today.

If Kostin keeps doing what he is doing, doesn't price himself too high, he can carve himself a nice contract from the Oilers and play a long time as an effective bottom 6 player.

A) Teams should never tell a player they are a third or fourth liner. They can always move up.

B) There is zero difference in the role of a third line winger and a first line winger. The goal is to score more than the opposition. The only difference really is ice time and who you end up out on the ice against.

C) Any team who says "this player could never have been that successful here" is poorly managed. If you can't explain to a player adequately that results dictate ice time and opportunity? That's on the coach, the manager and the team.

Why have the Oilers been a loser organization for two decades? Because they don't understand any of the above and they spend time getting media to promote the idea that anyone who leaves and doesn't rebound actually just sucked all along, and anyone who leaves and does bounce back clearly would never have done it here. Any mistakes they made in drafting or trades don't matter, because we wouldn't have drafted that successful player anyhow, or that player wouldn't have fit in to the Oilers system. Excuses, excuses, excuses.

The issue with Cogliano wasn't ever his attitude here. It was that the team didn't adequately manage expectations, gave him too much unwarranted too soon, and then traded him for magic beans the second we got someone else who seemed shinier (although hilariously that was Eric Belanger - which just shows how poor the Oilers are and have been at assessing talent).

So you are saying Cogliano is a liar then? He literally did a LIVE radio interview with Gregor that 1000's of people heard, I repeated what he said that he thought he should be playing in a certain spot and doing certain things and he wouldn't accept anything less but it's the teams fault they couldn't make a grown ass man bend to their will. OK then.

The player is wrong and Adam is right. I stand corrected once again Adam. Thank you for showing me the error of my ways once again.
