6 Cups

I was at the game tonight. It was a fun one. Some thoughts though:

- We got outplayed badly. There were only 3 reasons we won - 1) Koskinen played quite well, 2) McDavid is amazing and 3) Jarry was not good. The Oilers had a couple pretty ones on him, but the first goal was one we'd have been very annoyed about had it been on our guys, and he just barely cracked 80% in save percentage (.810 on the night). He was lucky it wasn't worse with the Hyman disallowed goal, the Hyman short-handed chance that got through his legs but he got just enough of and the Sceviour (or was it Ryan?) shot late off the cross-bar. Jarry is .938 on the season, to having a pretty good rebound campaign, but he was awful tonight.

- McDavid really gets up for match-ups. I think he's been good in almost every game against Crosby. Also - I think he knows when someone passes him on the leader board - it almost always brings a response. Suddenly he's right up on Draisaitl again.

- I didn't love the distribution of ice time from Tippett. Did not think any of the defence played poorly, but Barrie and Russell are not Niedermayer and Pronger, and playing them 26-27 minutes is a recipe for disaster. Just gets them exhausted and means that guys like Niemelainen and Broberg were sitting for long stretches getting cold. With that defence corps, I think you should be a lot closer to even distribution. You could see it hurt the team - they struggled to retrieve the puck and get it up ice throughout a lot of the game. If we have to use this group again, I'd like to see a little more trust from Tippett in the young guys.

- Impressively, with a team-leading 26:53 of ice time, Kris Russell didn't manage a shot on goal. He did set multiple new NHL records, blocking four more shots.

- I was worried about Puljujarvi when he left. Didn't even sit down when he got to the bench. Talked to the trainer and straight down the tunnel. Was relieved to see him come back and get the late assist.

- Poor Hyman, having his first NHL hat trick taken away. Saw on twitter he's now got 12 two-goal games and this would have been his first with three. Again, I hate video replay and think there's no good reason to have it for off-side. I'm okay with human error when it's a fraction of an inch play like that.

In the end, I'm happy to take the points, knowing we stole one. Also, 3-0 without Duncan Keith on the year!
