He's been crap most of the year. Tonight he has been "also in picture" (when not in the penalty box).
It doesn't help that the refs can't seem to see fit to call anything against the makebeLeafs though, Ennis hooked off his feet prior to the last Leafs goal was a good example while that last penalty against the Oilers was an example of a Leaf getting a cheap call (yes, I think Marner dove).

The stats don't really bear out that Bear's been bad. His numbers suggest that when he's been in the lineup, he's generally been one of their top defenceman.

I get that. But there are lies, damn lies and statistics - as the saying goes. Last game Bear was totally out of position on Nylander's goal (Bear was the right D and he pushed forward and left his position, which Nylander happily went through with the puck). I think some blamed Bouchard, but he was the only Oiler that was almost able to break up the play from his off-hand D position.

That lies, damn lies is usually said by people who don't understand statistics. Every player makes mistakes in every game. Sometimes those end up as a goal against, and people tend to remember those things more than everything else that happens. However, if 95% of what that player does is good, then it outweighs the bad and that's how players should be judged.

I understand statistics quite well, thank you very much. Many stats in hockey are really either based on subjective judgements on point in time plays or quality of items based on position on the ice - I take many hockey "advanced stats" with a grain of salt - nothing really advanced about them, but that is another discussion - I have been watching Bear and his decision making doesn't seem up to the quality it was last year. He's getting caught out of position, making more mental mistakes, and just doesn't seem to have the strength he had last year. Also subjective, I know, based on my observations. Thanks for the insult though - I can see sometime why some posters here get pi$$ed at you. Having said all that - Bear should be in the lineup ahead of Russel for sure, so he's not hot garbage by any means... just not up to the standard he set last year in my estimation.
Oh, and I would also say that Mike Smith's stats are misleading and due mostly to small sample size - you would have to agree with me on that, yes?

Stats/Eye test/lies and such aside I can see how Bear has been polarizing.
To me he has looked like a young guy who is making young guy mistakes while being counted on for more than he can handle. Expectations were pretty high after he surprised everyone last year.
Throw in a concussion and I am not concerned too much about him.
As usual EVERY single defensemen is playing a minimum of one spot higher than they are capable of and it exposes them

True, recency bias sees him really bad since coming back from his injury - the problem is he set our expectations too high after last year 
... he should have saved some of that calm, skilled play for this year!
