Yes agreed taking into account the defensive lapses for extended times and lack of bottom 6 production. Also special teams percentages and Neal are anomalies that will trend downward.

I wonder what the 80s Oilers advanced metrics look like. That would be cool to know. Would round out the research nicely.

There's an article that talks about PDO for the 1984 Oilers and Islanders. Both well over 100, which would be chalked up to luck now if a team was doing that well, but they basically both had all-star teams. Gretzky had a shooting percentage of 26.6% which we'd be sure would regress - and to a point it did, that was the highest of his career, but that was one of a stretch of six out of seven years where Gretzky was over 20%. He took a lot of shots, but not for the amount of goals he scored. He was just lethal. His top season for shots was 1981-82 when he took 370 shots...that's the 42nd most in a single season in league history. Ovechkin has had more shots seven times, but never come close to the 92 goals Gretzky scored that season.
Some of that is probably goaltending - the position has evolved greatly since the early 80s, but even so - his contemporaries were shooting on the same goalies without anywhere close to the same production. Gretz was also +553 in his time with the Oilers...I'm going to guess he was probably a possession beast...
