The lamest and worst of all fantasy plot resolution devices... it was, uh, magic. Magic did it. At least he had luck and fast travel on his side to save him at the battle he badly botched.

If the books are ever done, it'll be much, much better done.
Worth noting, in the show, as much as Jon Snow is the protagonist, he's generally been a pretty poor leader. He's got routed at every turn and killed by his own men...
But I do think his character is another one who's suffered since GRRM left the show.
